*New to Roon (as of today). Am about to build a new house that will contain many, many potential roon zones. Off the top of my head, I can see about a dozen. If I understand correctly, each Roon zone needs a DAC, correct? Also, the Nucleus appears to support up to six zones. Is this the total number of zones or the number than can receive output simultaneously?
If you want more zones then you should be looking at a Nucleus plus but only if you looking at playing back to more than six at one time. You need to have a playback device in each zone that as network access either by WiFi or by ethernet. Their a lots of options to choose dependant on what you want to achieve.
I would run Cat 6 to every location you might want to install a Roon end-point (play-back device).
Thanks. My plan exactly. Costs almost nothing to network every room, at least before the sheetrock is in place.
Thanks. Reading between the lines, I can set up many, many zones (I’ll network the entire house) and could play six simultaneously with a Nucleus, more with a Plus. Is there a limit to the number of zones the software can configure?
If you need more, you could always just use a powerful purpose built desktop computer and the skies the limit. I keep my server I built in the basement and it serves the whole house. Since it is in the basement and far away from any rooms doing any critical listening, I don’t care that it has 8 fans running or that the case is extremely large. Even then, it is dead silent at a distance of 2 feet.
I have 9 zones in total and don’t have a something as high spec as a Nucleus + it’s an i7 but just a bit below what the Nucleus + is. Roon does not use more than 2 CPU cores so if not going for Nucleus look at something powerful across 2 cores, any more is.likely to not help. I dont think there is a limit of zones just the number you can likely use at the same time. This will.be down to CPU.
Hi @Scott_Magill,
You can read more about this in our KB:
There is no limit to the number of Zones you can have in Roon. When it comes to playing to multiple zones at once, this is going to be limited by processing power and networking, as suggested above, but there is no hard limit to the number of Zones you can play to.
