AMBRE new RoonReady endpoint

I’m happy with my Ambre, but

  • Its RJ-45-based I2S connection is not easily adaptable to the great majority of HDMI-based I2S DACs.
  • If you don’t want/need Metrum’s brand of I2S connection, but would be happy with S/PDIF coax, there are smaller, cheaper options, including the Baby Ambre.

yeh my DAC is Naim uniti2 with integrated Amp , so Coaxial will be just fine for me , as currently using chromecast as endpoint , sound good but I know a real endpoint will sound even better

Question, which power cables do you use on the Ambre and Metrum dacs

Shunyata Venom 14. Main reason is to reduce electrical interference with nearby analog signal cables in my cluttered multiple amp setup.

i have an Ambre from the first charge of Metrum Acoustics, use it with a I2S connection and i am still very happy with it. No problems and wonderfull sound

Je suis ravi, mais pas i2s car dac topping i2s hdmi et je ne connais pas d’adaptateur donc connexion e AES audio sensibility

Sorry for the reply in English, I can read French but writing is another story… Converting Metrum Ambre RJ-45 I2S to the common HDMI I2S formats requires some digital circuitry. Probably something a skilled hobbyist could build, but it’s not just wiring. Audiophonics has an inexpensive streamer that does HDMI I2S. Never used it, though, none of my current DACs take HDMI I2S.

Hello, as mentioned here, you can find some i2s pin information if you want to manage cables from hdmi to rj45 (as far as we are talking about the same i2s). On some French forums some people succeeded between ambre and audio-gd (or perhaps denafrips) . You can find LVDS on HDMI and RJ45 like denafrips DAC.

Perhaps on forum-HiFi great guys could help you as they already done : link

Nice lightpseed you have there too, I also built one and have a couple of the simpler kits too

Excusez moi pour mon manque d’anglais
C’est un passif Lightspeed conçu par George Stantscheff que j’ai relooké, c’est le meilleur preampli que je connaisse.
Bien à vous

It seems that with your d70 you can select different configuration for the i2s/lvds hdmi. This is a good point to try to connect the rj45 of the ambre with the hdmi of the d70.

It is possible by hacking an HDMI cable by putting an ethernet plug ?

No. The signal encoding is different between Metrum and the PS Audio-style HDMI wiring. At some point, I found a document only that explained the digital circuit needed for the conversion, but unfortunately I can’t find it now.

After 2 months of listening, it seems obvious that the I2S on amber is superior to the others, I connected the Amber in RJ45 on a connector from audiophonic with a stabilized power supply, then I leave in very short HDMI on the Topping D70.

Really satisfied with the result

i sold my Adagio Pre/DAC cause of bancrupty of Metrum Acoustics (thought i would get no support anymore)
a few days later Metrum was back again but my trust in this company is lost.

the Ambre stays with me cause its sound quality, i use it per coax with a RME Adi-2 DAC FS now and do not regret the change. The Adagio was 6 Times the price but not better than the RME in my ears.

Metrum going bankrupt doesn’t imply your dac failing too :stuck_out_tongue:
Cees Ruijtenberg, Metrum founder, immediately after the news stated all Metrum products would be serviced by Sonnet (his, back then, new company)

anyway… since you weren’t happy with the Adagio… good for you
mine stays whatever happens to Metrum  someone will have to pry it from my dead cold hands

Suddenly there was no Metrum company anymore, all sites were dead.
Noone told me, that a company named sonnet gives support.
I was in fear to loose 6000euro with a little defekt…

So i sold the Adagio with a great loss. Two days later a new site came up.
Very bad company policy for me, i would not buy gear from them anymore.

The adagio was good, but the 900euro RME sounds as good and has more functions
