In the previous version, my Naim NDX-2 in AirPlay mode got the correct default zone icon (resembling an actual NDX-2):
Now I get a generic speaker icon:
and no way to change it to the Naim icon as it’s not included in the Edit Zone Icon choices.
Interestingly, the icon is now also wrong in the older remote B1410 on iOS. (The update is not yet in TestFlight, so I tried with the old one)
My Naim NDX-2 <> AppleTV handover and grouping is flawless now:
It works starting with either device and then switching to the other, with and without stopping the first device, and with and without waiting 5 seconds. Grouping also works starting with either and grouping while stopped as well as grouping while playing. (I realize now that the one thing I didn’t test was grouping a device that was already playing something different, but I trust you )
→ Most or the time the NDX-2 makes no sound, though the progress bar continues to advance.
Note: Sometimes it works
This also happens sometimes with handover from ATV > NDX-2 AirPlay but it seems less often.
I could not reproduce it with these handovers:
NDX-2 AirPlay > NDX-2 RAAT
NDX-2 AirPlay > ATV
ATV <> NDX-2 RAAT in both directions
While a handover RAAT > AirPlay on the same device might seem silly, I suppose one would do this when listening to a RAAT stream and wanting to move it to an AirPlay group
It’s true that AirPlay always pauses at the start of a stream (and handing over) for 2 seconds because of buffering.
But my comment was in the context of my previous issue (in the B1410 thread that was linked) where switching from ATV to the Naim by AirPlay would fail when done immediately, but would work after pausing 5 seconds during the switching.
A single HomePod mini can be used by Roon, but a separate set that are configured as a stereo pair has the same issue as before: I can select them as a single zone, but nothing is played. I start and stop a track, restart a track, etc. and still no movement on the track indicator and no sound.
Seems like a different variant of mine. I guess timing could play a role, and maybe I could have reproduced the same if I had tried 20 times rather than 10 Looks to me that this can all be sorted with some fine tuning
m1 mac mini - still no sound when both ethernet and wifi interfaces are connected on the mac, still asks to accept/decline each time playback starts
apple tv - PIN accepted, playback working now
wiim pro plus - still works
ropieee with shairport-sync in airplay1 mode - still works
multiple raspberry pi (and similar) devices running shairport-sync in airplay2 mode - playback working now
/ multi-device sync - generally good results, issues with sync on the wiim pro plus … so far have only tested two devices at a time
mac mini + apple tv (good)
shairport airplay2 on Pi + shairport airplay2 on Pi (good)
shairport airplay2 on Pi + apple tv (good)
mac mini + shairport airplay2 on Pi (good)
wiim + apple tv (bad)
wiim + shairport airplay2 on Pi (bad)
Despite this, Roon is still sending an Airplay 2 stream to my first generation Naim Mu-so, which only accepts Airplay 1. In contrast to e.g. an old AppleTV, which is correctly identified as only accepting Airplay 1 - see below.
As expected (and tested) the issue as described for B1410 persists:
@Ivan, @vova - is the relevant Roon code recognising first generation Naim Mu-so (not Roon Ready and only Airplay 1) as distinct from later / 2nd generation Naim Mu-so? The audio settings suggest that Roon B1410 and B1414 expect the device to have Airplay 2 functionality, which is not the case.
Tthere has been longstanding weirdness in the communication between Roon and Mu-so Gen 1 relating to Airplay implementation, so it may not quite work as expected.
(In the past it led e.g. to unexpected playback at maximum volume, which needed al lot of to and fro between Naim and Roon to get, more or less, resolved or mitigated. If interested just search for the thread “Max volume on start of playback via Airplay - Naim Mu-so” - that is just the public side of what became a long and convoluted saga )
In any case, currently Roon can’t play to the Mu-so Gen 1 via Airplay at all . At least in my case, but there was some corroboration I believe.
If Roon indicates an AirPlay 2 stream I have no complaints … just as long as the Naim Mu-so will be able to deal with it as it could until recently.
@ben, one thing I noticed playing to a single HomePod mini is that when playing an AAC file from my Mac Remote, the yellow/orange quality icon was shown, while playing to a stereo pair of minis I have the green dot showing that this is going through the OS mixer (and the stereo pair is not playing at all). Just some more information if it helps.
Also, FWIW, re-reading some rather old threads on Airplay issues with the Mu-so 1st Generation, I do need to qualify my “only Airplay 1” as even back in 2019 it was stated by the MD of Naim that:
Alrighty then, quick update. After “baking” on my network for 1 hour, the stereo HomePod mini pair now play correctly, and in stereo. Not sure why, but I’ll take it.
And both my Apple TV 4Ks, using AirPlay natively and with the third party application TV Remote, still are not working. Apple TV 4Ks were updated to tvOS 17.5 and rebooted, no playing progress, no sound.
