I have been researching the best Alexa speaker for music to find the right option for home listening, smart features and overall sound performance. After going through expert reviews from sources like the new york times, rtings and the verge, two models consistently stand out as top recommendations:
The Echo Studio offers powerful, room-filling sound with deep bass and clear vocals. It supports Dolby Atmos for a more immersive audio experience and comes with built-in Alexa for voice control. It also includes a smart home hub, making it useful for controlling compatible devices. With its strong audio performance and smart features, it looks like a solid choice for music lovers who want an all-in-one Alexa speaker.
On the other hand, the Sonos Era 100 is known for its balanced sound quality and modern design. It also supports Alexa voice control and offers multi-room audio through the Sonos system, making it easy to connect with other speakers. It has WiFi and Bluetooth support, and is often praised for its clarity and refined sound, especially for indoor listening setups.
However, I’m having trouble deciding which one would better suit my needs. I care about sound quality, smart features, ease of use and the ability to connect with other speakers. Good bass and clear vocals are important, and I’d prefer something that works smoothly with Alexa.
Has anyone tried either of these? Which one would you suggest – the powerful and feature-packed Echo Studio or the more refined and flexible Sonos Era 100? Any advice or personal experience would really help.
They suffer from noise interference from the built in power supplies.
I decided to open one of them up and found components damaged during manufacturing. Mainly due to a cavity being too small for the number of components on the board. A capacity was partially crushed.
I have Sonos devices and would recommend them over any Echo.
@MusicD Thanks for sharing your experience. That is really helpful, especially the issue you mentioned with Echo Studio. Your feedback makes me lean more toward Sonos now. Appreciate the honest advice.
I have a stereo pair of Era 300s in my office. They sound “OK” but what makes the whole experience eye-opening….
To get around the destruction of Sono’s own app architecture I bought their $20 analog to USB dongle and plugged a WiiM Ultra into it. This set-up sounds better. Like, significantly better. Yup, I have no idea why but I set the stereo pair at volume 90, use volume on the WiiM, and just use the WiiM → Analog → USB into the back of the Sonos Era 300s and it sounds better.
It’s laughable to me that any of these speakers review as “good”. There is a whole consumer market for these lifestyle products and they certainly have a sound to them. Why I ended up with Sonos in my office is a long story but don’t trust any of these reviews from any of the locations you referenced if you truly care about sound quality. You will be very disappointed. If you care more about “smart” features sure but certainly not about sound quality.
Also, I’ll remind you, the Alexa speakers don’t support Roon.
ipeverywhere says:
“Also, I’ll remind you, the Alexa speakers don’t support Roon”
What speaker are you referring to when you say Alexa speakers? It’s not clear to me.
The JBL Authentics speakers work with Roon via WiFi, plus you can use Roon’s Muse to tailor the sound to your liking. It does Alexa and Hey Google. Is it HiFi? I can’t say.
The Authentics300 sounds great when I’m taking my morning shower, and getting dressed in the morning. It also sounded pretty good when I carried it to the garage (still playing) to listen while washing the car.
It’s all relative.
I don’t mean to sound like a sales person, but with Roon, WiFi, Bluetooth, Tidal, Qobuz, stereo with a pair, and battery operation on the 300, I love this thing.
