Best native DSD DACs for use with HQPlayer?

This is the better module in Spring 3 KTE and Holo May. You can see the orange connector.

This is the regular USB module with blue USB3 connector. Two different designs.

Yeah, but what is the difference looked from the analog output signal point of view?

But it clipped. With convolution you need to set max volume lower by the peak of our convolution.
Mine at about -6db

Naw no clipping I have it set at 0db
Limited says 0

Volume knob is red, which means that it clipped at some point.

Keep the volume at -3dB or lower to avoid it. Never at 0dB.

EDIT: Apparently the volume knob can turn red without the signal clipping.

If it clipped you would see it on the “limited” counter.
Limited counter is at 0 and has been for hours.

What you mean?
While testing the two Holos where connected through XLR to my Primare PRE35 Prisma (it has two XLR ins and outs and you can adjust the volume gain) and then to my different (headphone) amps from Holo Audio, Cayin, AudioValve and Pathos.

which 2 Holo models were you comparing?

No, not correct. People that don’t know what they are doing should absolutely stick to -3dB max advice - so that is absolutely good advice if people don’t know what they are doing with matrix pipelines for example.

But if you add a Matrix Profile with only -100dB gain applied to all channels and no other DSP, the knob will be red - do you think it will clip?

It will not

I have one set of EQ files that I use with HQPlayer and other software, so I have my 3dB headroom management already incorporated in those, and for all software I simply stick to 0dB digital volume. Not having to worry about different EQ files for different software.

If the knob is yellow or red before you begin playback, it is warning sign that you are potentially pushing your luck. If it was normal when you started playback and turned red during playback, you have hit the limiter…

It is curious that HQP is so readily integrated as a playback engine within roon, hmmm. Why did things stop? I mean, it seems collaboration ended… could be a greater partnership.

If you look at the things Harman/Samsung want Roon to focus on (like folder browsing after all these years of rejection LOL) , it is pretty obvious why HQP will be way down on the list

Especially if Harman/Samsung have never heard of HQPlayer before they acquired Roon (I don’t know, just an idea) and that’s when they first heard about Roon’s integration with it.

They have bigger fish to fry, in their eyes, at the moment. They literally published a list of priorities and not surprisingly (to me) there is not mention of HQPlayer.

Yea, but even up until the buyout… Why did roon even allow it in the first place and not embrace it fully, ya know? I guess I wonder if HQP will be involved at all going forward…

Well Jussi himself asked this some weeks ago

So if he is asking it, makes sense for everyone to ask it too

Now we can feed any source into HQPlayer easily and cheaply, no need to worry

Yes way too many alternatives out there while there is only ONE hqplayer

Well do you think that he had an active matrix profile with -100dB gain applied? Why would anyone have something like that active?

Only occasion I’ve seen the volume knob turning red, ever, has been clipping. If it does that on other occasions also, that’s fine and I wasn’t aware of it.

Anyway, as said, it’s a smart move to keep the volume level at -3dB (or even lower if there’s an active DSP profile) to avoid clipping. I keep it at -6dB since -3dB is clipping for me because of the DSP profile I use.

It is an example to test with, to convince your eyes that it is not always required to have -3dB knob - if someone knows what they are doing…

The point, which you didn’t understand from the example, is you can have the digital headroom as part of EQ/correction filters

Yeah well obviously you like to make things the difficult way. For other people, just stick with the -3dB (or lower with DSP) advice, recommended by Jussi himself. There’s simply no downsides having the volume at -3dB, it won’t affect the sound quality in any way. It also makes zero difference having the -dB baked in the filter vs keeping the volume level lower in HQP.

I already wrote this, please read it:

My reply to you was in reply to your words

Which is wrong for the guy you were talking to @Cameron_Rector - he knows what he is doing, hence he has no clipping

So he has no worries  Except for raising funds for $50k custom Pi HAT
