It’s a common issue - an artist credit must already be in the library in order to be found when editing an album or importing files. If you have duplicated artists, you can merge them (instead of exchanging them), but it’s probably best to avoid the issue - before I edit, I always ensure that all credits are already in the library. Yes it’s a PITA
I have lots of on German-language pop/rock music from smaller/“indie” labels and the quality of the predefined metadata is rather poor - in comparison to e.g. US bands where it is very usable even for many small labels.
So I have to edit credits a lot and very frequently this happens (same in 1.7 and 1.8):
Add credit, search for Artist
Artist not found, “create artist?” > Yes
Finish editing, save
Search for artist name, suddenly it does find an existing and correct artist of the name, now I h…
Check out the (many) threads about box set and multi-disk handling in Roon. It’s not without pitfalls and certainly not perfect. Many people have developed best practices.
If albums end up as unidentified in Roon, it doesn’t break anything, they just don’t get automatic metadata. Once the metadata is added in some way, they work just like identified albums.
Add the metadata as tags to the files as well as you can.
Before you import the album, ensure that you first add albums to the library …
