Can't log into the roon software

Maybe, several Chinese users posted there anyway

I have a question. I can temporarily log into the roon software using the method of restoring a backup. Except for the source data and roon arc, all other functions are temporarily normal. This indicates that the software’s use is not related to being blocked by great wall, except for its inability to communicate with the official roon server. If the official cannot temporarily solve the metadata communication issue, can you release a version that allows us to play locally at least.

There is another problem. If the problem is caused by the Great Firewall, then we should not be able to access the Internet. However, I can access YouTube, Netflix, and all other websites including roon and tidal’s official websites and forums. Why does the Great Firewall only block roon?

你说到点子上了,我们能够在这儿发贴,能通过浏览器登录 tidal,也能登录 roon,唯独从 roon app 登录受阻,所以我觉得是 roon app 的原因

赞同,就看看会不会版本更新能解决这个问题

You may be right, there be a problem with Roon but personal experience suggests that when firewall or security fixes are performed they often cause unpredictable & unknown events elsewhere., Just a thought…

Hey @DianQing_Guo,

Thanks for writing in, and sorry to hear about your issues accessing Roon! As a next step, could you please reproduce the issue without the use of a VPN, and share the specific date and time? From there, please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs from the issue device to our File Uploader?

Thank you! :+1:

Hello, I have uploaded the log file of the Roon server on the Synology NAS to the server you just mentioned. I should have noticed that I couldn’t log in on June 17, 2024. However, the problem may have occurred earlier than this time, as I was on a business trip for several days and didn’t use Roon

Hi @DianQing_Guo,

Thanks for sending that over. Based on your status, and if no upstream services are reliable, you may need to try a different proxy service or VPN. Roon however isn’t equipped to provide guidance on how to bypass state firewall restrictions, but users have gathered useful anecdotes in threads like this: Is Roon banned in China?

I hope this may help.

我也是一模一样的问题,在中国使用。

Thank you for your response. However, if it is indeed a VPN issue, it will be very troublesome for us because we cannot know in advance which VPN can connect to your server among so many VPNs. If we switch to an inappropriate VPN, we will not only spend money unnecessarily, but also fail to solve the problem. If the problem is indeed caused by the VPN, we also hope that the official can provide a detailed guide or provide us with some VPN channels that can be used stably.

Actually, for me, whether I can communicate with the official server and obtain song metadata is not my biggest concern. My music library is stored on the local Synology cloud storage, and it’s all about familiar songs that I usually listen to. I can also create covers myself. What I’m tired of is that the software can’t log in. Now every time I listen to music, I need to restore the backup and wait for several minutes. If the VPN issue can’t be resolved for the time being, can your software provide multiple options for offline listening in subsequent updates? If so, it won’t have a big impact on me.

其实能不能和他们的服务器通信我觉得都无所谓,喜欢的歌曲基本上都是那些老歌。现在就是每次登陆都要恢复备份,很烦。

I also think it’s illogical to attribute the inability to log in to software to the Great Firewall. The Chinese government’s intention in opening the firewall was political, to avoid the influence of excessive reactionary public opinion on its citizens. Roon is just a music software, which can be said to be far from the political level. I can use VPN to log in to YouTube and various overseas websites, even if they are reactionary websites like rfi.fr. According to the principle, the Great Firewall should prioritize blocking access to such websites?

I also encountered it recently. ARC cannot connect. It is very slow to access without VPN, but you can log in. The network service is provided by China Telecom. The problem is very specific at present. If you use surge to bypass the firewall to Hong Kong globally, everything seems normal. But the address obtained by ARC is obviously also Hong Kong. It will not work. First of all, I would like to suggest that 1. The official domain name of https://api.roonlabs.net/porttest/1/myip to obtain the IP address can be changed to other domain names to facilitate the diversion to domestic direct links. 2. I found that after the official IP is obtained, it will be transmitted back to the server to verify the accessibility. If the official server is blocked at this time and the verification cannot be completed, it will not appear in the ARC search list even if it is mapped. Therefore, I suggest that ARC support the method of manually specifying the domain name plus port. You can refer to the similar mechanism of emby. After all, most PPPOEs are dynamic addresses that need to be changed frequently.

I don’t think it’s a VPN problem. I tried several different VPNs today, but I still can’t log in

My company produces 100% apolitical software that’s used by many professionals in China but on some days they get download speeds of 1 KB/s. Not everything about this is logical

Different values lead to different understandings and expressions. VPN is illegal in that region!

I have had the in Belgium (while on trip). When I came back, I have had to restart from a backup. Unfortunately it is the 3rd time it happens. I use a Roon Nucleus. But otherwise, I can’t miss the app.

Hi @DianQing_Guo,

I apologize for the situation you’re in and the issues you’re having, but unfortunately, it falls outside the scope of Roon support - I suggest opening up a conversation over in our Tinkering category for additional assistance.
