Cheap streamer advice

Thank you for reining me back in. I was thinking that, in a pinch (“when things are playing up”), the OP could stream over DLNA or AirPlay from the mobile device, but that is definitely different than a more deliberate Tidal Connect connection for sure.

Following advice here, I have been using the WiiM Pro for a month or so without any kind of hitch.

Extremely easy to ‘install’ and configure and apparently (I haven’t tried it) works with Tidal.

You could try out the NAD BluOS device:

As always some great replies and suggestions

What’s the difference between tidal connect and say just using tidal through the Wiim or BluOS app?

It doesn’t run Bluos.

Tidal connect uses Tidals own app to control playback same as Spotify Connect does. The inbuilt ones use the api and have all the limitations that comes with so not all the customised playlists etc. Bluesound support connect as well but I don’t think they have updated to support the new lossless stuff.

NAD CS 1 isn’t bluos it only uses apps to control streams or stream to it via Airplay. Again not sure they have updated to support lossless on Tidal. Wiim has for both Tidal Connect and API so it’s the best in this regard and has more features if you want them. DSP is simple and effective. You can connect something else to it via analogue or spdif and also make use of the DSP.

So Tidal connect is the way to go. Especially for playlists etc.

Thanks again

Yep you get all the benefits of their own app, so apl their recommendations etc which you don’t get via a lot of api appd and certainly not via Roon currently. But you do get the choice to use either which is good.

So I may have hit an issue. I was just about to order the Wiim Pro and did a little further reading.

It looks like I have to connect the Wiim to my Devialet, looks like by Toislink.
The issue I configured my digital inputs years ago to use with Headphones.
I no longer have an SD card reader in my lap top so cant change my SD card which gas the configurator saved on it.
I could buy a cheap SD Card reader I guess, but chaging the configurater for me is just more time away from music.

For some reason i thought an Ethenet connection to the same switch as my Devialet would be the connection.
Am I getting a bit lost here :grinning:

I beleive it did have until I changed the Configurater.
Like I said above I can buy an SD card reader and change my settings, however I am only buying an addditinal streamer because the current Roon issues are dragging on…so considering waiting a little longer now

It looks like I have two digital inputs ?

Sorry I have no idea.
I do know the two pre outs shown above can be reconfigured as they were initially digital inputs.

This was the origianal set up

You can set Digital 3 to being Coax SPFDF via the configurator.

If getting the coax setup is an issue, the latest Node can use it’s USB as an output, I use that into a DAC. The iFi Zen does as well, however it’s more of a headache to setup than the the Node.

Yeah they seem great value

As I won’t be needing the better DAC as the Devialet has the DAC I think the Pro would be suitable for me

SD card reader bought from Amazon this morning. For £10 I cant go wrong :grinning:

The only thing stopping me buy the Wiim is sods law Roon will sort the IOs issues out and the Wiim would never get used ever again. Oh and the hassle of having to take the SD card out. My D200 is hard to get to and I need to be a bit of a contortionist to get at it

The WiiMs - Mini, Pro, Pro Plus - all sound the same via digital output. They all sound marginally better than either the NAD CS1 and Bluesound Node, but the emphasis is on marginal. CS1 is barebones, there’s no BluOS.

The WiiM app is on a par with BluOS.

If you go WiiM consider a better 5V power supply as it gives a slight (but IMHO worthwhile) boost to SQ (whether digital or analogue output). IFi’s iPower 5V is good / inexpensive.

All the above based on having all the streamers in for review and comparing them directly. See Hifistarters.club for the individual reviews.
