I am an on-and-off subscriber. Mainly because I think Roon is a poor value for money and the usability is EXTREMELY poor at times. It works for a while, but now and again, particularly if left alone for a week or so, something breaks for no apparent reason and it is almost impossible to get it working again. I HATE the setup process, particularly with issues surrounding networking. Roon is FAR from user-friendly. I would have thought Samsung would have liked to focus on making Roon robust and easy to use but alas, it just seems to get worse. I have wasted another Sunday just trying to get it working instead of enjoying my music. This is a very poor user experience. Also, relying on a community of volunteers to support the system seems crazy to me. The support system is slow and painful and includes people belittling users who aren’t computing or networking experts. Seeking support with Roon makes you feel you’re just not competitent to use the system. It’s not at all enjoyable when things go wrong.
The Sundays I have spare and to myself are few and far between. These are the days I can actually sit down and use Roon to enjoy my music. I reckon 50% of these Sundays are wasted fiddling about trying to get it to work. It’s a complete waste of time paying for the subscription. It’s a shame because when it works it’s amazing. It just loves to break itself. I do not understand why the developers can’t get the basics right. All I am trying to do is connect it to the folder that contains my music, or the speakers and audio devices to play the music. Rather than allow you to browse to a network-shared folder like any other computer OS, it forces you to type in confusing network path strings that should but do not work.
Each to his own , I have used Roon as my main music player for coming on 8 yrs , I have had zero technical issues with it , yes it’s not perfect and there is functionality missing , coming soon.
That said there is nothing else like it if it suits your use case at any price. Even the hardware based apps are a pale shadow despite being designed fr he individual streamer, eg CA StreamMagic
If you are having technical issues maybe look to your own system , especially the network and any added complexities such as under specified PC’s. If you detail your system , maybe a few suggestions will be forthcoming
The only weak link is the lack of Roon Nucleus. Seems like Roon should be a hardware solution.
Sounds like you’ve been very lucky, unless you also have a Nucleus.
Roon would be good value for money if it worked flawlessly every time it’s used. Hand on heart, for me it’s 50/50.
I have a basic home network and all my endpoints (apart from some Sonos speakers) are connected via Ethernet.
My Roon core runs on an Apple M1 Mac Mini which also runs a Plex Server for Video media. The Plex server works flawlessly and never fails.
All my media files are stored on 2 separate NAS. One for music and the other for music and video.
Mine is a 10i7 NUC , 32gb RAM with internal drive, ethernet direct to router
I also ran for a long time o an i7-7700 desktop
One thing you could try is a direct connecting USB drive, just as an experiment. Quite often NAS users report issues
This is my point. It’s a problem quite often.
One of my Roon Endpoints has a cd bay and is a streamer/ripper with an internal HD where my music is stored. So I would be duplicating my library if I were to direct connect a USB drive and I would need to keep it in sync.
I have no doubt it would be more stable with a USB drive connected to the core but that doesn’t help me really.
Even trying it would identify the problem !!
Where is you music stored , maybe describe the devices ??
Robert has created a Support topic, that describes the issue, additional advice and support should be posted there.
Let’s keep this topic for general feedback to Roon management.
I am not seeking support here. I am just giving feedback about how I feel about the lack of reliability and ease of use with Roon and therefore it’s value for money.
As mentioned, I don’t have 365 days spare to enjoy Roon and too often when I look forward to sitting down with it, it breaks for no apparent reason and I find it so difficult to troubleshoot.
Understood and that’s totally fine.
It was @Mike_O_Neill’s questions and your now deleted reply that prompted me to post and this discussion was morphing towards a support discussion and less so feedback for Roon.
If you wish, you can continue the discussion with @Mike_O_Neill in your support topic, that way all the information and history is together in one place.
I wish you good luck getting to a resolution.
