My music is stored on a network share (on an Innuos ZenMini) and Roon will not let me access it.
Describe your network setup
EE WiFi 7 Router, Ethernet and WiFi, Netgear and TP link ethernet switches, Synology NAS and Innuos ZenMini connected by Ethernet. Roon Core is M1 MacMini running 15.3.2 (24D81)
The crazy thing here is that I can easily access the 2 network shares I have my music stored on via my home network on ANY other device including: Windows Laptop, Mac Mini Finder, iPhone File app, Plex, pretty much anything. Just not Roon of course!
In the network share location field, you have entered \\ZENMINI but you have not entered the name of the share on the zen mini device.
The share location should, as the example text immediately below suggests, look like ‘\\<host>\<share>’. In your case, is ‘ZENMINI’ so it should look like ‘\\ZENMINI\<share>’
You say that you can access the location from a Windows laptop. If so, you should be able to copy and paste the network share location from the windows file explorer address bar.
E.g for a share created on one of my Raspberry Pis:
The selected text in blue ‘\\BEDROOMPI\dietpi’ can then be copied.
Note: If you just enter ‘\\ZENMINI’ in the windows explorer address bar, you will see a set of (1 or more) folders representing the available shares on that machine:
e.g. on the same device as above (which only makes one share available), the share name is ‘dietpi’:
Thanks for the reply. However, it makes no difference. The screenshot I sent was just one example of the many different entries I’ve attempted over hours of messing around and reading various support instructions. It just returns the same exceedingly unhelpful error every time.
I’m not a user of Innuos servers so I only have one last question, what version of the Innuos sense are you running? It appears that Innuos may have changed the required login credentials for the latest version. For Sense 3.2 and later, the login and password are ‘guest’ and ‘innuos’ respectively whereas 3.1 and below used anonymous access which equates to ‘guest’/‘guest’.
Hi, Thanks. Yes. I am aware of this. I have been using the correct credentials. However, this is not an Innuos issue. It is a Roon issue.
I have just removed the network share folder for my Synology NAS from Roon (that was working perfectly only a moment ago). Just to see if I could add that back and alas, I cannot.
So now I can’t add either network share folders on the Roon Core that is running on the very same Mac that can easily navigate to both network shares. I just cannot understand why Roon is so user-unfriendly. As mentioned, my Windows laptop can also see both network shares. As can my iPhone. It is just Roon that refuses to connect.
Well, it’s not a general Roon issue. I have absolutely no issues adding network shares on my system - Roon Server on DietPi (debian based linux) for 64 bit Intel.
I typically use the Windows format ‘\\<host>\<share>’ rather than the Apple/Linux format ‘smb://<host>/<share>’ but that should not make any difference and, indeed, I have just tried using the smb:// format and that works equally well for me.
Unfortunately, I don’t use Apple devices and have no experience with them so I’m not sure I can help further.
We’ve enabled diagnostics on your account and were able to confirm that the external storage is already mounted on your Mac, where the Roon Server is running.
Could you please try setting the path to your library as /Volumes/music and let us know if that works for you?
When selecting /Volume/music, this refers to a local folder. To add it, follow these steps: Settings → Storage → Add Folder → Use the Up arrow near the folder list to navigate back to the root directory → Volumes → music → Select Folder.
You can test the local connection first. If you notice any performance issues, we recommend using a direct connection to the NAS shared drive via the Roon application for better stability and performance.
Based on diagnostic data from your account, it appears the credentials used to connect to the shared drive are incorrect:
Yes, that worked. It’s a shame these institutions aren’t on the support pages.
However, my concern is that the shared folder has to be mounted on the MacMini first for Roon to be able to access my music. Also, as you mentioned, a direct connection to the NAS is more stable.
I have just checked the credentials used to connect to the shared drive. I use them to mount the drive on the Mac Mini and so they must work. When I use the same credentials in Roon it doesn’t work.
The NAS is an Innuos Zenmini. The credentials and network path I am using (which work fine on the MacMini and my windows laptop) are as follows:
I have also contacted Innuos support in case it is something their end. Roon connects directly to my Synology NAS but just not my Innuos Shared Folder.
Thanks for the follow-up and for your patience so far! Good to know you can connect to the local folder as well.
Have you set up the shared drive to contain proper share settings within the Mac itself? Here’s more info on how to do this:
Sometimes it is helpful to re-enable Account specific Windows file sharing by clicking the checkboxes off and on again. Let me know if this allows proper connection!
