Connect Roon to Devialet Dialog or Phantom

As an update Andrew from Sonore updated the firmware for the Sonicorbiter SE. It now has 176k capability. fyi

Andrew was explaining to me this was an oversight when the unit was developed. Not a hardware issue at all. He has updated my unit to version 10 and I am streaming with Roon doing all processing. The SO is simply passing the signal now at current sample rates. On DSD64 and DSD128, signal processing is done at 352 to 176 and played at that rate, not up sampled to 192. The sound has gotten even better. DSD256 sounds very crisp. Andrew was explaining the chip alone on the SO is 100 bucks! The ability to switch to Sqeezelite mode is cool. I can tell you the Squeezelite mode does not sound as good as the Roon Ready mode now after the update. Treble and high end are not as crisp and mid range is much sharper on Roon Ready mode. Nice job Andrew and terrific support.

Just to answer a few questions here. First we have fixed the output rates on the SPDIF port of the Sonicorbiter SE. It now supports 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz, and 192kHz both in 16 bit and 24 bit.

Next the supported rates of the Devialet Phantom and Bridge. Devialet does not list what sample rates they support in any of their literature or their web site. But the Devialet users I have talked to have determined through testing that Devialet also supports all of these rates.

Now on to DSD. Devialet does not support DSD so itā€™s important to convert DSD to PCM if you want to play DSD on the Devialet.

DSD 64 is 2.8224 mHz at 1 bit which would be the same as 176.4kHz at 16 bit. Since 176.4kHz is a multiple of 2.8224 mHz you get a very good conversion to 176.4kHz. This is what Roon does.

As for volume control. You can do software volume control in Roon. Roon Server uses a very good resampling algorithm for this. You get the advantage of controlling both the volume and music played from one app. If you want the Devialet to do the volume control you will need to use their app. You should make sure you are only useing one app for control and have volume disable (set to 100%) in the other.

Only listening tests will determine if fidelity of Roon or Devialet volume control is better or the same.

If you are using Roon you get some advantages using a RoonReady certified endpoint, such as the Sonicorbiter SE.A certified endpoint has been tested in Roonā€™s lab and guaranteed to have the highest quality connection. You can see, in the attached image, the Roon Advanced Audio> Transport light is on at the Sonicorbiter SE end of the chain.

Many thanks Andrew. Could you please confirm whether Melco is in the forthcoming list of RoonReady products?

Could you give us an approx idea of when can we expect a larger number of RoonReady choices (now is only Auralic or Sonicorbiter)?

Many thanks Evan. I would simply like to have more visibility about ā€œcoming soonā€ productsā€¦

@Alvaro_Iza: Weā€™ve put up the information partners have allowed us to put up. We canā€™t talk about their product lines.

Not sure if anyone is still monitoring this thread, but incase someone is - should I take it the general view is the Sonore - Sonicorbiter SE (assume iFi iPower Supply) will connect to both Expert and Dialog and allow control of volume for both, via Roon? - and sounds good or even great?

The Dialog only has SPDIF input so volume control must be done in software by Roon. This is an OK solution but will effect your sound a little.

The Expert has a USB audio input so in theory you could control the volume inside the DAC by enabling hardware volume control in the RoonReady app. Iā€™m not 100% sure hardware volume control over USB is available on the Expert. You should ask about this on the Devialet forum to see if this is possible.

It isnā€™t, sadly.

That said Iā€™m not sure Iā€™d trust my Devialet with Roons volume sliders - far too easy to accidentally go LOUD - especially on the iPhone! I could see someone having a heart-attack, scaring neighbours, or causing damage to something!

Yes probable a good idea to stick with the on-board volume control.

Unless of course if you are using SAM configuration - Devialet will not blow your speakers but maybe unpleasant for the neighbours and certainly a shock to your ears - I do agree the volume control on the iPhone can be easily turned up - I have been caught out a few times

SAM doesnā€™t protect your tweeters to my knowledgeā€¦ but yes, I get the point. Still, as someone who listens at -45 on average, -35 at the loudest, the thought of a guest tapping the Roon volume slider at 100% would make me very nervousā€¦ scared actually. :scream:

That said Iā€™d love to be able to control the volume from Roon, but with a slightly different design and a ā€˜maxā€™ setting for safety.

Roon API in upcoming 1.3 will be able to control your Expertā€™s volume via rs232.

As for the Phantom, I use a Sonic Orbiter and it works fine.

Hi Danny, for Devialet specifically what will 1.3 offer other than volume control? Thanks

Mindful that Devialetā€™s latest model range includes a 1000 WPC amp, I would agree that that this is good reason to be just a little bit nervous! :worried:

1.3 will not offer anything for the Devialet. It will offer an API.

Using that API, one can integrate products like the Devialet Expert line via the RS232.

Iā€™ve gotten standby/sourceselection/volume working, but ran into issues with the USB input disappearing from the host computer when you switch to it. It causes problems.

The volume stuff in my ā€œRoon Extensionā€ works fine.

I noted these issues here:

Hello,

First post here, but Iā€™ve been reading this forum for months and read hundreds of posts, but I havenā€™t found what Iā€™m looking for; Iā€™m still lost :

I have 2 Devialet Phantom + Dialog, my music is on an Intel NUC, I own Roon (obiously), but I donā€™t know what is the best solution to obtain the best quality chain.

How should I connect my NUC to my Phantom?

Thank you in advance for you help!

Sebastien

This is a really frustrating thingā€¦ Iā€™ve been using a Roon Ready network->optical bridge (like the sonic orbiter or rpi+hifiberry) and hooking up the phantom via optical.

Then tell Spark to raise volume to 100% and use software volume in Roon.

Itā€™s not ideal, but it works well enough. I use it to great effect.

The Phantom has zero public information. I started a reverse engineering to the Spark protocol for volume control, but stopped because our relationship with Devialet was becoming real. Unfortunately, they stopped responding to us after some initial exchanges.

I would also like to see better integration with the Phantoms. Having to control the Phantoms using the Spark app is the only thing holding me back from buying additional Phantoms. If it was Roon Ready, that would be even better. I realize this is not in Roonā€™s control. I have the volume control for the Phantoms, but native support in Roon would be even better.
