I’ve been a fan of R2R dacs for many years, and have 2 Soekris DAM 1021 based dac’s and while I do like the sound of the Denafrips I prefer the flexibility the Lumin D1/2 give me for my wife to be able to play Spotify at will. Maybe one day a Denafrips DAC will be in my system, but have have quite a few friends who have them and love them.

about to order an Ares II, any feedback guys? my other option is a Topping D70 but tilting towards the Ares II lately.
Just that one is a delta sigma and the other is an R2R.
Probably a toss up. I have a D90 for my headphones.

I got a Topping E30 to see if I noticed the improvement from the onboard DA1 es 9016 and I did, so want to go forward, not sure if the D70 would worth the upgrade?
Keeping in mind how different the D70 and the Ares II are one is more than $200 cheaper, would the $200+ worth?
I liked my Ares II so much that I upgraded to the base Terminator. It’s a night and day difference between the two. I thought the Ares was great, but the Terminator just takes all the goodness of the Ares to another level altogether. More transparent, more clarity, wider/deeper soundstage, better low end control, nice mids and highs. End game DAC for me…of course, I also said that about the Ares II

You may find the Terminator Plus also to be extremely good.

I have been reading a lot about the unit, operation modes (OS/NOS) filters in OS mode (slow/sharp) etc.
To understand, when using the unit in OS mode it will always oversample to DSD then to analog? is that what it does?
does that means it is just silly to oversample at the Roon layer? or two different things?
Love my TPlus + Iris D2D converter. Denafrips does not upsample to DSD. From the manual…
In OS mode, the PCM 44.1kHz or 48kHz based audio data are up-sampled to the maximum
rate of PCM1411.2 or PCM1536. There is no up-sampling of DSD audio signal.

May I ask: is there a reason that you did not go with the GAIA vs. the Iris?
I gather you find an audible difference between the T+ with and without the Iris.

Of course. Simple, really. The Gaia has inputs for Toslink, AES, Coax and USB, where as the Iris only converts USB. I only need to convert USB to I2S, so the other inputs were unnecessary. Don’t want what I don’t need. 
Do you have a streamer in your system, and where is ROCK located in that system? No CD/SACD transport?

Thank you. That’s a great system (as you know). I run a CD transport to the T+ via i2s. Prima Luna for the front end…excellent choice. Wonderful.
