Denon avc x3700H

I am running Roon from a nucleus and have the above home cinema receiver which is Roon tested.

I can only use Roon via airplay. I must be doing something wrong?

Help!

Hey @Nick_McAndrew,

To get started, please fill out your system details from the setup below:

Roon Core Machine

Include your operating system and machine info (Model, CPU, RAM)

Networking Gear & Setup Details

Your network gear (model of routers/switches) and if on WiFi/Ethernet

Connected Audio Devices

Specify what devices you’re using and their connection types, like USB/HDMI/Chromecast, etc.)

Number of Tracks in Library

Tell us how large your music library is, eg. “30,000 tracks”

Description of Issue

Tell us about the problem you’re having in as much detail as possible. Screenshots are always appreciated!

Roon Tested can refer to AirPlay or USB. No Denon AVR is Roon Ready.

What other connection type were you expecting?
“Roon tested” only means tested onnections over USB, airplay and chromecast.
“Roon Ready” is needed for RAAT connection.

I use HDMI from NUC to Denon 8500h. With HDMI you can play multi-channel hi-res.

Details below :

  • Roon Core is a Nucleus

  • I use a Netgear RAX 80 as a modem/router.

  • My main system is a NAIM based system and my music streamer is a NDX2. This is connected via ethernet

  • I have various Sonos speakers around the house which Roon sees.

  • The Denon AVC is in another room. It is connected to the network via an Ethernet cable and it uses a powerline connection to link to the modem/router.

  • I have 50,000 plus tracks stored on my NAS (synology DS916+)

  • My equipment is linked to the router via Ethernet either directly or via a powerline connection

I can see the Denon AVC but can only use Airplay. It does not show the Roon interface. It shows the Denon Heos interface.

Not sure what is going on so any help would be appreciated.

I’m sorry, but what were you expecting? The Denon is NOT Roon Ready, so it does not understand the RAAT protocol, which would be necessary for sending multichannel audio over ethernet, and for displaying Roon content on the Denon screen (if Denon developed their software to do this).

You will only get airplay on that device. It doesn’t have a Roon network interface as it isn’t Roon Ready just roon tested.

I am fully aware that its not Roon Ready.

It was a simple question as Denon (and a dealer I spoke to the other day) give the impression that the Roon content will be available on the screen. Its not a massive issue but it would be nice to have. Denon need to be a little clearer about the limitations of their interaction with Roon as their website gives the impression of more of an interface and interaction than there actually is.

Not sure if you have the Denon already and if a ‘now playing’ interface/feature was something you really wanted or if you were just seeing if you could enable something like it, post the dealer leading you to believe the Denon supported it.

But if you use Airplay you should see the basic metadata and artwork for the current track on screen.

If you want a ‘now playing’ screen with the Roon branding you could always plug a Chromecast into a space HDMI port on the Denon and use it as a Roon display. You don’t need to be sending audio to the Chomecast to do this, it can simply be used as s ‘now playing’ screen separate from audio.

Although if you have you Nuculus physically connected to say the HDMI1 input (for audio), by default you’ll be seeing the video from that HDMI input too (which is just a basic black diagnostic/status screen), so you’ll never see the the ‘now playing’ screen via the Chomecast as it will be connected to a different HDMI port.

I know some AVRs allow you to setup an ‘input’ to play audio from say HDMI1 and video from the HDMI2 port, but not sure if that’s possible on your Denon.
