Do I need a DAC or soundcard from my PC to run lossless signal to my stereo receiver if my receiver has a high quality DAC built in?

Yeah, it shows up as Airplay only.

So I know I can get a completely lossless signal in my system by using a soundcard or a DAC.
I has a Strix soundcard which got me there before it died.
But my question is, is there any point in getting a good DAC or souncard if the signal is just going to be interpreted by my Yamaha receiver’s DAC anyway? What’s the process when a DAC is sending a signal straight to another DAC? Is it a weakest link in the chain situation?

The question here is does your AV on its analogue inputs have a “PURE” setting or does it “Process Everything” , my ONKYO did it simply by-passed all the processing with an analogue signal and just amplified.

EDIT: According to the spec sheet it has

If you put a streamer/DAC in the chain , you output could be Analogue ie the Streamer DAC does the work

You could by-pass the streamer DAC and choose one of the Digital Outputs of the streamer (they usually have them) to go digital (optical or coax) and let the AV DAC do the work , maybe a bit of a waste of the streamer DAC

That’s why the best option is streamer with NO DAC and just a digital output so it just bridges the stream to the AV and the AV DAC does the work . In your case the output would have to be Optical or Better CoAx (Optical is often limited to 96/24) as you don’t have USB.

Google Allo Digione Signature to see what I’m talking about

Clear as Mud ?

Post a screenshot of your audio chain in Roon.

Although I suspect Rugby’s post above will solve your issue in combination with Roon’s exclusive mode.

Crap. I was going to just buy the Allo Digione Signature, but they are out of stock!! ugh.

Yeah, the problem is when using WASAPI from the motherboard the signal is “high quality” and not lossless.

Have you enabled exclusive mode? That signal chain looks like you’re going via the OS mixer.

Yes, that works, but it isn’t lossless due to the lower quality from the motherboard’s output. I currently have no soundcard. It would work if I bought a soundcard or a DAC but I am trying to find the least expensive way to do this, without sacraficing sound quality.

And the DACs in these receivers are usually just fine for their system, anyway.

I’d buy a little micro-PC for a couple hundred bucks, put Linux on it, put Roon Bridge on that, and then use the HDMI output of the PC to go into one of the receiver’s HDMI ports.

Here’s a HOW-TO for connection to a Yamaha AVR:

Skip steps 6, 7 and 10 where he installs HQPlayer, unless you want that, too.

What does your signal path look like when you enable exclusive mode?

Jamie,

Ah hahahahahah! That’s it! You solved it!
I had exclusive mode enabled on my old pathway but not the new one.
I also went into the PC’s sound settings to make sure they were enabled for the highest bitrate and frequency.
I now have a completely lossless signal and I didn’t have to spend another dime!
Thanks to you, and thanks to everyone for their advice and help!

Great Stuff , glad you came right . The Allo Digione is based on a Raspberry Pi which is in very very short supply !!
