Dutch & Dutch 8c: pre-Roon Ready thread

Calling all SHD Studio owners - when I power on the pair of 8cs and the SHD Studio, I often (but strangely not always) don’t get any sound at all from the speakers. The only thing that seems to help is disconnecting the SHD Studio power cord and plugging it back in. Does anyone else have similar experiences? Thanks in advance!

Hi Eka - owner of an SHD studio and 8c here, I never had this issue. I assume the SHD studio is connected to the 8c via AES in a chain. If yes, is the Left/Right setting of each speaker correctly set? Your problem may sound like a AES-cable issue, are you confident that it is working properly?

I have had this problem. I just assumed it was an SHD bug.

Hi nico_las, thanks for chiming in. Yes, the speakers are connected to the SHD via AES. The cable seems fine, nothing fancy but proper 110 ohm cable. It just seems that the SHD and the speakers don’t always “shake hands” when I turn them on. But they always do when I disconnect and reconnect the SHD power plug. Weird

Hi Aaron, do you have this issue regularly? Or how common is it?

Probably once a month.

Hi, I don’t have issue with AES input. However, whenever I rebooted my android TV that connected to SHD studio via toslink, sound would be resumed after several minutes but not immediately.

Hi Graeme,
I run mine with a Puritan Labs PSM156. It is a six way block with noise filtering and DC blocking. It is capable of handling high current and can be used with power amps quite happily. I have not noticed a huge difference when I use it with the 8c, except that my wiring is tidier. It makes a much bigger difference to amps and other components which use large transformers, where is noticeably reduces mechanical hum. If you want to try it in your system, please just let me know and I will send it up to you.

Regards,

Lee

@Martijn_Mensink, I know its a little bit off topic on the Roon forum, but will the D&D 8C’s also support Tidal Connect? I’m not that bothered with Roon as I only use Tidal streaming. I only use Roon for the audio quality through my Cambridge Audio 851N. But i am more then ready to only have the 2 speakers as my setup

I think you would need to check the listing of approved devices on the Tidal web site. I assume they would be adding additional devices as time goes on.

Hey Brian. Roon is our #1 priority right now. After that, we will gradually support other platforms as well. We’ve looked into a couple of the more popular ones, but not into Tidal yet. If you like the idea of simplifying your setup, with Roon a pair of 8c’s and Roon is all you need.

Oh good. Soon? Should I put off buying a streamer then?

Hi Martijn,

Thx for your swift reply. I do think really simplyfing it would be to use only Tidal app + speakers. Just like Kef is offering as well with their new wireless line-up.

I understand Roon has prio now, it’s been long awaited and Tidal connect just only announced. I just wanted to shine light on it. 1 last question:

When using Roon w/D&D over ethernet, will they be able to unfold MQA? This will be quite critical wether to keep or not keep a seperate streamer.

Thx!

B.

That’s a question I don’t really know how to answer. I totally understand why you’re asking the question, but I honestly can’t give a definite release date at this point. Knowing what I know, personally I would wait, but I know how difficult waiting can be if you don’t know if you’ll be waiting for another couple of weeks, months or even years. Therefore I can’t really tell you if you should put off buying a streamer.

From where we’re standing right now, it looks as if we’re very close to the top of the hill we’ve been climbing for so long now. But once we get to that top, it might turn out to be a local maximum, with the actual summit being much higher. Who knows.

A system consisting of just a Roon Core and a pair of 8c’s, I think that would be really cool. The one thing I do know is that we’re getting closer every day

Hi Brian. The unfolding will have to be done in Roon.

I’m really close to that currently. I have a roon core USB connected to a Matrix X-SPDIF 2 converting to AES to the 8cs. When the roon support is available, I plan to pull out the Matrix.

I’ve had the 8cs since August 2019. They are outstanding. The REW integration is great. I moved to a new home and it took only 15 minutes for me to set up the room correction filters with REW. I have the process down now.

Thank you very much for the detailed reply.

I’ve been coming to the conclusion that some kind of streamer is needed anyway for the plethora of sources it’s nice to be able to use. Not to mention all the various and constantly changing streaming services.

Are you able to indicate the relative sound quality of roon playing direct to the 8Cs vs playing via a streamer? I would expect that a very high quality third party streamer would sound better than the built in 8C streamer? If so investing in a high end streamer now would not be wasted.

All streamers, unless badly designed, will sound the same.

and a few will sound better… I hear good things about the Lumin U1 mini. I think @Craig_Palmer is using one with his 8cs, but an Allo DigiOne or Signature would probably be good too. With the Allos you would need a 75 to 110 converter like the Neutrik NADITBNC-MX.

Hi @Martijn_Mensink

Is “Chromecast Built-in” possible with the current 8C hardware?

Or the current 8C can’t support it (even with a future software update)?
