It would be great to be able to browse and play the various ‘Best 50 Albums of 2025’ lists from the major music magazines and websites within Roon.
Bonus points if the album page showed which year end lists it appeared on, along with a link back to the full list.
Which lists appeared in Roon is an open question, but Roon could easily start with a hand picked selection of manuals entered lists / awards from the the main music sites and grow the list and extend functionality over time based on user feedback / uptake.
I know I can scan the lists on the web, but it would be nice to have them inside Roon and be able to see which albums have ended up on loads of lists, conversely to view a list and quickly listen the key tracks on each album inside Roon without have to cut, paste and search each one manually.
You can kind of fudge it with existing playlists, but ideally each album would only appear once in the list so that it could be easily scanned. One solution be to ‘fold up’ albums in playlist view so that only the title (and maybe the key tracks are shown) unless you toggle to open the album fully in playlist view.
Ideally each list would include an image, a text description and a url to the original article the list came from — that’s kind of true for regular playlists as well.
I could also imagine a slightly modified version of this request being useful all year round in terms the various websites and magazines ‘pick of the week’ and ‘awards’.
In terms of where the data came from, the simplest solution would be for Roon to manually enter a dozen of so lists themselves each week / year, not exact a huge task if the backend was there. But longer term you could potentially crowdsource the data via a web interface (using double entry checking to ensure the data was correct) and allow users to suggest new lists / awards for inclusion. Somewhat akin to how live radio station additions, translation strings and the current crowdsourced photo selection tools leverage the Roon community to provide additional data.
TBH this feature could probably be covered simply by implementing a bunch of other existing playlists request, but hopefully it serves as a use-case in it’s own right and lends weight to why improvements to playlists would be welcome.
