Feedback Thread - Roon 2.0.30 Playlist Management

@Geoff_Coupe , I agree it would be simpler to just hide them, but given that most people will opt to display OR hide them, it certainly isn’t difficult to click the now very accessible gear icon (“Settings”), and disable them on the first screen (“General”). I don’t imagine this is a Setting we’ll be toggling on/off frequently.

I don’t want to sound grumpy, but I really hope and expect Roon to develop the ability for me to customize my own view of the left sidebar and/or the home page.

I was playing with creating playlist folders and I noticed I can’t “move” Tidal curated playlists (Tidal “staff” made playlists, but also Tidal playlists created by me in Tidal), only “copy” them, into a folder.
So, for example, I have 20+ liked Tidal curated playlists that are all in some way in the “indie” genre, these are playlists created by Tidal which means they get updated by Tidal, they are not created by me in Tidal. I would want to put them in an “Indie” folder to separate them from the 100+ Tidal playlists that are in the already generated Tidal folder. To do that I can only copy them, which means I will have 20+ duplicates, because copying them into this new “indie” new folder will make these 20+ playlists local ones, which means they won’t get updated by Tidal. And this means I’ll achieve the contrary of the tidiness I was looking for.
This way, if I want to maintain the connection to the “original” Tidal curated playlists, I am forced to keep the Tidal curated playlists inside the already generated Tidal folder without being able to tidy them in genre/mood/activity folders.
I would want to copy a curated Tidal playlist only when/if I want to modify it. But I would just want to tidy them (which means being able to move them and not only copy them) in other folders in the same way I can do with my local playlists I can create in Roon.
(I’m aware I can use Tags like playlists folders, but since I’m creating actual playlists folders and there is this option, I would like to have everything in the same place)

Great video - thanks

My biggest pain with playlists is not being warned that I’m adding a duplicate track to a playlist - the streaming services all do this. If it’s not possible to stop me doing it - perhaps there is a scan playlists for duplicate tracks function that could be implemented?

I have a “Favourites 2024” playlist - and obviously this is current for the whole year, so having more curation and editing tools to help me keep it clean of dupes would be an amazing step forward for Roon.

I just updated and I see zero difference? I don’t get all the squabble? When checking, it says I’m on the latest update…?

The video is excellent and a great way to give a quick overview. Thank you. As soon as I started to explore the new left side menu, the increase in responsiveness was startling.

Did you all tighten up the code a bit too? Just great.

Since overview videos cover a lot of terrain, it might be useful to have other, more focused videos on the same topic. A walk-through of one or two ways of organizing a playlist.

You are aware that there is a „show duplicates“ option in the playlist‘s options somewhere?

When viewing a playlist you’ll see a gear icon to the right of the column names: Click this and there’s a toggle “Only show duplicates”.
But I agree it would be nice to be warned a track is already present when adding.

I appreciate being able to filter My Playlists by streaming service but it would be nice to also have a filter for local playlists.
And can we bring back the streaming service icons beside the playlist titles?
These appear in the sidebar but not the My Playlist screen.

Oh my goodness, I’m so freaking excited about being able to have my Qobuz/Roon playlists update in either direction now!! WELL DONE, ROON! I just added a random track to a playlist that was only before being shown because it was pulling from Qobuz, but could never actually add tracks to it. SO I added the track, opened my Qobuz app, and there it was. Then I deleted it from the Qobuz app, and it updated on Roon automatically. This has been something I’ve been wanting for eons. Heck yes!

Thanks! ….found it - but seems to be only on Mac (in my case) and not on IOS (iPad or iPhone) - but good to know it’s there.

The function could be slicker for sure - a warning against adding would be super - but extending it to other devices would be welcome, and how about a “remove all duplicates” function?

The difference isn’t notable unless you have the sidebar open. Then it’s super obvious.

In his video, he said they have been thinking about it for “many, many months”

This was a long release to get integration with Qobuz and Tidal playlist edits. To have new folders show up on the top of the Playlist screen. To have a new menu. All of that took months for sure, not a few weeks.

I would agree that for those who are not solely focused on playlists, the first opening of the new version that has playlists (all of them!) dominating the sidebar was a jump in the deep, cold end of the pool. Being able to turn it off is at least some way to address it, but being able to tame it by choosing what playlists or folders of playlists are displayed would be far better. The all or nothing means many people choose nothing, which means this whole feature is useless to those who moderately use playlists or otherwise don’t love the look of a disorganized list of playlists that are effectively in the main menu.

Another possible approach, though more of a band-aid, would be a smaller scrolling window with playlists so that there’s less visual dominance.

Really, what I would like would be more of a configurable sidebar. I dynamically generate playlists (really, queues) using Roon Tags. Static track playlists aren’t my thing. I would love to have tags or better yet bookmarks of my tag queries on the sidebar.

I agree with you, all playlists should show by default with a filter icon for Roon.

How it works now, is with no icon selected you are seeing the Local Roon ones (not Local Imported ones) only.

I love that prose!

Thinking about =/= development.

May well be. They also said many more things are to come.

That’s exactly why we shouldn’t expect the backlog of years in playlist development to be fixed in one release, is all I am saying. And saying that there is a long backlog is not an excuse.

First of all, I really like all of the changes. However:

  • I have some playlists (eg Christmas music) that I don’t need to see all the time. I’d like to either have more control of which ones are shown on the sidebar OR be able to put them in a folder and keep that folder folded on the sidebar.

  • I feel like if History is in the sidebar, then Play Queue should be there right above it. The icon could still also be shown in its current location.

  • I feel like Bookmarks should be in the sidebar that same as Playlists and also have folder support.

That only works in theory. If you add the same track from an album tiwhin your library, remove it from your library and add the track again but from outside your library, they are NOT considered duplicates.
