Can’t find any information on this mystery item. Where did you hear about an R9 and what exactly is it supposed to be?
I’m torn between pulling the trigger on an R7 or waiting this one out to see how they equip the new one…
Here’s some info from the ‘horses mouth’:
I’m sure whatever the R9 brings to the table, it will be purely quality.
Check this video out. Which other manufacturer is so confident of their quality, that they publish their own tear-down video?
If R9 has the same relationship to the R7 as the M15 has to the M11 Plus then the R9 will weigh about 500 pounds ![]()
Hi team - have just grabbed a FiiO R7 a few days ago, and agree with @Martin_Kelly that it’s a really fun device to use with Roon. The display is quite handsome with the Roon artwork etc, and it’s easy to flip between the RCA outs and headphone listening with a physical switch. I had previously been using iFi’s excellent DAC/Headphone amp combo, but the balanced headphone out from the FiiO into my HiFiMan XS sounds fantastic too.
Great value for the price, and Roon Ready is always worth having.
The R9 is INCOMING!!!
But God only knows how it’s gonna ‘best’ the R7?
The R7 is a seriously brilliant bit of kit ![]()
In case you missed it:
Did FiiO announce details on this somewhere?
Have you pre pre-ordered it?
No ‘official’ word from FiiO yet, but they’ve obviously had it ‘out’ for dems at CanJam.
I’m not a fan of the R9 aesthetically, I don’t like that lighter coloured side bar personally.
It might sound trivial but if it needs to live in a family room it needs to look good imo.
I have the AKM version of the K9 Pro which I connect to a raspberry pi running MoOde Audio and roon bridge, powered by a linear power supply and it’s my go to desktop headphone amp at home.
In the office I use the Poly/Mojo2 combo, I don’t actually understand the comments about the battery life (in the context of this thread about a desktop system) I just plug it in at my desk, it can charge whilst in use. For a portable roon endpoint it’s fantastic and is really easy to EQ using the coloured balls once you know how.
It’s probably the easiest device to EQ quickly, whilst working.
.I do like FIIO, I have the FH7 IEMs and if I needed a DAP would try the M17, they make really nice kit.
Love my M11 Plus, great sounding DAP and not as brick like as the M17.
Ditto Lewis ![]()
I’m also thinking of ‘sticking’ at the R7. The R9 is apparently gonna retail for £1.5k. That’s twice the price of the R7. That, in itself, isn’t a problem.
But I’m just listening to my R7 now, and it’s the perfect combination of usability and absolutely superb performance. I just can’t ‘see’ how FiiO could improve on the R7?
No doubt it will have dual cutting-edge DAC’s, rather than just the single ESS908SS found in the R7, and it will probably deliver tonnes more power. But the R7 can drive my (very hard to drive) HiFiMAN HE6se V2’s to almost deafening levels as it is, with absolutely zero distortion. How much more power does one need?
The R9 would have to literally blow my socks off to trump the R7.
Maybe it comes with an improved LPSU as well?
Yes, I would imagine so Michael, especially for the price.
Although what I find curious is that from the published pics so far, it still has the 12V DC input on the rear, like the R7?
You would have thought if it had an LPSU fitted internally, there would be no need for a 12V input?
I guess we need to wait for more information.
It seems pretty expensive so will be an interesting watch
This from the comments of the AudioScience review of the R7.
"The R7 is a fantastic device and hasn’t skipped a beat whatever source I use. I recommend it and there’s a second generation R9 in the works. This will have upgraded dac chip, headphone amp, ram, storage and screen." The guy doesn’t say where he got this info but I guess we can take him at his word.
I’m sure it’ll be fantastic but at more than double the price I paid for the R7 I’ll be staying with that for a good while yet. More than happy with what it delivers.
