Forum poll. What kind of speakers do you have? What do you like about them?

Thanks a lot, but Daniel has already sent me very detailed information in a PM. :grinning:

Our main pair of speakers is a passive DIY design from North Creek called Big Kats. I chose the design because of the near wall placement (which we need because of the small size of our home), and the fact that the bass extension is down to the 30s Hz. (As a trained bass trombone player, the quality and accuracy of the bass range is important to me.)

Veneer is Canadian curly maple.

I selected 8 gauge copper for the woofer crossover, a bit overkill.

Digital actives! Nubert nuPro A-700.
IMO it’s their “honesty” that makes them outstanding speakers. And they’re (relatively) affordable, too.

Sorry, there’s no English version of this website.

Could you share a picture or two? Would be great…:grinning:

Pictures, please! I used to have the same speakers (back in the 1990s) and I absolutely LOVED them!!!

I have exactly those North Creek inductors ! Mine hang off the bottom of my crossover box like the proverbial. Are North Creek still around ? I know they had a terrible fire a while ago.

No, after the fire (building burned to the ground) they moved out to Arizona and then closed the business.

I have 3 North Creek speakers, but my main pair are the nicest.

Genelec 8351. These active speakers with built-in DAC sound great. In love the option in Roon to set the max. sampling frequency of the DAC, so Roon cares for the best possible signal path.

Been thinking about Heresys, also. I here they are different beasts with a tube amp. Would a 35 watt PrimaLuna amp be enough to drive them?

I have the Heresy III and I originally hook them up to a 40 year Realistic 40 watt amp and I found that they had a more softer and also more bass tone than when I hooked them up to Yamaha A-S801 100 watt amp.

A pair of Devialet Phantom Gold. Great actives! Hopefully Roon RAAT soon. For now RPi3 with Digi+ optical board works great to stream from Roon up to 192k/24bit to Phantoms. No drop-outs even when using wifi.

I have a pair of Dali Zensor 7s. They suit my listening room, music tastes and Arcam A19 amp. If I were to replace them I’d probably give the Rubicon 6s an audition first … awe the walnut veneer!

Hi Slim! Paul Klipsch himself said: “What the world needs is a good 5-watt amplifier.” This alludes to his famous love of high-efficiency loudspeakers, and the fact that a low-power amp is sufficient to drive them quite well.

My tube amp is 3.5 watt, not 35 (and that’s not a typo). When I turn it up to 60, it drives my wife crazy, so imagine your 35 watts! In short: you should be more than okay! Let me know how it goes if you proceed

Hi Will, do you feed your actives with AES3 or analogue XLR? I saw you have Classe Audio components but not sure what they are / models.

Cheers

There are a great number of reasons to access the roon community. Support, the “do we feel the same way about xyz” etc etc

But by far the greatest draw is component porn/envy. I started all this way too late - have too many commitments and too little cash. But the shop window licking is so enjoyable…
