Not sure if this is because it’s all so new - but every evening I’m finding myself digging music in Roon for hour(s). I’m actually thinking about a piece of software when I’m out the home, thinking when I’ll get back and can go clicking through and really explore artists I like.
Thank heavens when I queue tracks it has that countdown timer to say after x min/secs to track what time I’ll finish - else I’d be on this all day and night.
Does this calm down or this a common Roon user thing
Roon actually did have the effect on me when I first tried it out. I could do most of the things Roon can do before and without Roon, but to have it all smoothly integrated in one piece of software is nice.
I use Apple Music which I really like too - there was an album that popped up there, but I went and searched and played it in Roon. Not because of some night and day audible difference, but I was curious about clicking the artists behind and seeing what else they’ve made/their background/influences etc.
I don’t spend a lot of time surfing through the metadata, except when adding music that is new to me and I end up going down the rabbit hole.
But I do spend a lot of time actively listening to music or having it playing in the background somewhere on our property. I happened to see the statistics for Recent Listening one day and was a surprised to see it averaging over 100 hours a week. I’ve had my Roon setup for over 6 years and this is what the usage looks like in retirement.
Wow. Over 15 hours per day on average. That is a lot!
My own listening is much, much lower. Even though I am retired, I am busy away from home to the extent I couldn’t possibly average more than 4 or 5 hours a day on average. In practice, it is significantly lower even than that.
I also have to differentiate between quality of listening. There are occaisions when I listen to music for the musics sake - but there are also plenty of occaisions when I have background music on whilst performing different activities.
Hey Wade, yes it’s a lot and surprised me. But those stats include times spent working out in the greenhouse and shop. I have several Ethernet cables over 100’ that reach the out buildings on the property and Roon Ready Elac Z3’s that work well in those locations.
My home page shows Roon is playing about 40 hrs per week pretty consistently, though I’m not really listening about 20% of the time.
More surprising to me is the history page shows 141,242 plays since late 2019 when I started using Roon.

It will ease off somewhat after the initial wow factor…maybe…lol.
After 7 years I still find myself clicking on “similar artists “ and diving head first down yet another dark deep rabbit hole.
Especially if I have iPad in hand, phone calms my exploration down a little.
I always have Roon playing something while working on the computer or out in the yard or garage.
Serious evening listening might only be two albums though as I have to get my vinyl fix in first.
yeah, I think we’re sorta like @Mike_LC and for the most part, always have it on - at least in the background. We too have endpoints in our outbuildings and in the yard and garden …For us, the greatest thing about Roon is ability to group different endpoints together, and have it synced everywhere in the house, and outside.
I am constantly listening to 100 plus hours of music a week. I joined Roon one month after its inception I have been a lifetime subscriber since then and have been happy, there’s no looking back. Roon is great for my home with 6 streamers It is great with my library of 6800+ CD’S SCAD and Hi-Def 16bit and 24Bit digital downloads along with Qobuz and Tidal.
I like to listen to Pandora a couple nights a week to explore new songs & artists. Seems to work much better than Roon in my experience.
Then I go to Roon to do my actual critical listening of that music.
I also love to watch YTube speaker reviewers, then write down what music they listen to to make their opinions, then play that same music on Roon. I’ve learned a lot. There is sooo much music and diversity of music out there. Its crazy.
