My Dave Holland Mix this morning included 7 tracks (of 25) by a band called Zydeco Crawdaddies. Nothin against zydeco but pretty much 180 from Dave Holland. Also 3 Norah Jones tracks which, while a little closer stylistically, isn’t what I would choose. Been noticing a lot of this on Roon mixes lately.
Another playlist screwed up: today Nils Lofgren’s playlist.
Nils Lofgren : 6 tracks out of 25 (3 tracks from 1 album)
Pink Floyd : 14 tracks (6 tracks of DSOTM , 5 tracks of WYWH, 3 tracks of The Wall)

Any update on this? I stopped using Daily Playlist.
(Heart) breaking news. Bone Gnawer made it into a Mary J Blige mix! Yeah
More power to Vālence I say …
I had a Bone Gnawer song play in Roon Radio last night in the middle of 90s/00s pop tracks by MJ, Justin Timberlake, Britney. Does someone from Bone Gnawer work for Roon?
Hi All,
We have identified the cause and are working out a solution. Thanks for your patience in the meantime.
Yeah, my first thought was that Bone Gnawer had somehow hacked the algorithm…
Very happy to hear you’re working on a solution, thanks!
Can you give us a hint about what caused this? I’m very curious!
I have noticed this seems to be also affecting some Recommendations on artist pages as well. Had some very odd ones yesterday. Raised a separate ticket for it.

Description of Issue
Roon Daily Mix has now turned to garbage and is unlistenable. Why are my Daily Mixes peppered with Bone Gnawer and foreign language music? This certainly has nothing to do with my listening history.
EDIT: A fix for this can’t come too soon.
Hi @Jim_F - see also below - looks like it’s hopefully in hand!
The shortish answer for this one is that we’ve got some code that aggregates the stuff we know you like/play to look up things that are similar to it and this aggregation could misbehave so it grouped up some metal bands you like with Lana Del Rey and so Bone Gnawer got picked up by those bands.
After that failure, later machinery looked and said ‘Yep, Lana Del Rey and Bone Gnawer are in the same group - looks good to me!’
This aggregation is fairly central to how a lot of things work and so finding this bug was important but given how central it is to recommendation I’m being careful and not just throwing in a hot-fix.
This fix may help with the diversity issues (multiple tracks from same album) but probably not - that is a separate issue that is blocked by the above issue
Thanks Nathan. So will the diversity issue be looked into as a follow on from this fix?
At the moment my priority is to fix every complaint with mixes and I’m fixing them in the right order based on where and how I find the issues.
Of course priorities change - but I’ve been spending a lot of time smoothing the road so hopefully now I can drive on it, so to say.
Fingers crossed that your work indirectly (or directly even) fixes the rut of repetition in albums and bands that a Roon Radio session ends up in.
The infrastructure for the two is generally separate so it’s unlikely to produce much difference in radio. There will be some difference because the aggregation fix will apply - but again that’s not related to the repetition.
Anyways - radio is on my radar.
Great to hear from Devs here on the forum!
Thanks a lot for looking in to this, and for the detailed explanations. Please keep that up, very interested to hear how this happened and how it’s (hopefully) fixed.
I do listen to a lot of different music, including metal, but I’d never listened to Bone Gnawer (or some of the other odd bands that have made an appearance). I guess the algorithm judges “similar” based on what it has learned from multiple/all Roon users?
In any case, I can imagine it’s a delicate balance to make. I do love getting surprised by new music served up by Roon in daily mixes, so some variation is definately welcome. Similar must be a compromise of "similar"but not “too similar”…
Good luck and keep us updated please!
Yeah given some of the stuff I saw in your profile I think maybe Bone Gnawer wouldn’t be a godawful recommendation for you if it was in the right mix.
Bone Gnawer with Lana Del Rey - not a chance.
As far as what is similar to what - yeah the algorithms currently are almost entirely driven by user play.
I’ve got a fix for this particular issue and I’m doing some more on mixes at the moment. Not quite ready to roll them out with the weekend so close.
Similar must be a compromise of "similar"but not “too similar”…
Exactly. The balance of this compromise is why we have too many duplicates in Mixes ATM. Lets see what we can do here.
