Hello. When listening to online radio, playback keeps stopping and I have to keep pressing "play". This happens when used with both PC and iOS. From other sources (Apple Music, Audirvana, Tidal, Qobuz) there are no such problems.
I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.
However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.
First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.
We’re waiting for diagnostic logs to reach our servers; they should upload automatically the next time your RoonServer is online.
What is the name of the station with which you’re having issues? Do the dropouts occur regardless of the stream selected (AAC vs mp3) and the Zone output?
In the meantime, please ensure that your have a reliable DNS resolver assigned in your router settings page. Here’s a guide specific to the make/model of router you mentioned above for setting an alternate DNS server:
We usually recommend Cloudflare (1.1.1.1).
We’ll look through logs at the timestamp you provided as soon as they reach our servers. Thank you!
Hello. The online station is called Hard Dance Radio: HDR Lounge & Chill. However, these problems also arose at some other stations in different countries and with different flows. Only one area of devices was used for playback. If necessary, I can check tomorrow if the playback will stop on others. The frequency of stopping playback is always different - sometimes every minute 10-15 times, sometimes very rare, sometimes absent.
As for setting up the router, I find it difficult to check with the recommended parameters, because I have no experience.
In addition to the previously directed playback interrupt time, I would like to inform you that on 11/08/2025, playback interruptions occurred at 19:13; 19:48; 19:49; 19:52 (UTC+03:00).
It looks like we’re unable to reach your server to request a fresh diagnostic report. Because of this, we’ll kindly ask you to send over a set of manual Roon Server logs for further review.
Can you please use the directions found here and send over a set of Roon Server logs to our File Uploader? Once logs have been uploaded, please let us know so that we can check the server for your files, thanks!
Here is a link from google that can help you adjust your DNS server - we’ve seen it help many others with similar issues:
Hello, I have sent you 3 folders “Logs” from the folders “Roon”, “RoonServer” and “RAATServer” (three separate archives). The names of the archives are “Nemec, Nemec_@list.ru”, “Nemec, Nemec_@list.ru (RoonServer), Nemec, Nemec_@list.ru (RAATServer)”.
In addition, I inform you that during the playback of online radio on other sound sources (on headphones) there was no sound pause. Audio stops when playing through AirPlay on 10 Harman Kardon Citation MKII speakers and on the Belkin Soundform receiver, through which sound is delivered to wired speakers.
However, on other programs (AppleMusic, Audiorvana, etc.) there is no sound stopping.
The playback devices (10 Harman Kardon Citation One and Belkin Soundform) receive a signal over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and, judging by the green signal indicator, as well as information from the router, have a high signal strength.
If you try to play the same Live Radio station to your System Output zone (PC internal speakers), does it drop out at the same time as the other zones? Or does the stream continue on the speakers?
Hello. I started an online radio station on the “System Output” source (PC speakers). At the same time, I played the radio station on Airplay devices. Music was played simultaneously on two springs.
I am not sure I understand you previous message. Did the zone drop out on both System Output and Airplay at the same time, or did the stream continue to play as expected? Please clarify, and if possible let us know the approximate time + date, so that we can review diagnostics.
I apologize, not quite an accurate translation. Playback stopped only on 10 Airplay devices (Harman Kardon Citation One MKII). At this time, the radio continued to play on computer speakers. This happened on 11/19/2025, at approximately 12:50.
We’re having trouble reaching your Roon Server to enable diagnostics, could you please use the directions found here and send over a set of Roon Server logs to our File Uploader? Once logs have been uploaded, please let us know so that we can check the server for your files, thanks!
Thank you for your patience. Here’s what we’ve found after looking into the provided files.
Diagnostic logs show Airplay’s realtime streaming protocol (RTSP, Airplay’s control channel) breaking down. Within the context of a 10-speaker WiFi group, this is almost certainly due to network saturation.
In the case we observed from logs, at least four of the endpoints in this Airplay mixed group reported simultaneous packet loss. In other instances, more speakers reported packet loss. Every case resulted in the control channel stopping the stream because endpoints weren’t receiving packets reliably. Roon is receiving these logs from Airplay receivers in the speakers - it’s Airplay, not Roon, that’s tearing down here.
Airplay isn’t really designed for groups larger than about 2-4 devices, particularly in a WiFi environment. This protocol relies on a separate stream to each device - with 10 simultaneous grouped devices, that’s exponentially more radio traffic than playing to a single speaker.
Do you have any issues if you don’t use Airplay? What about playing to a single networked endpoint with another available protocol, like Roon Ready or Chromecast?
If I understood you correctly, the problem is in the excess of the technical capabilities of Airplay? But if I play audio from a PC (Ethernet) via Airplay on a 10-speaker Harman Kardon Citation One (MKII) from the Apple Music/iTunes app, then there is no problem. How does Apple Music differ from Roon in terms of Airplay audio stability?
However, when I stream audio from my Apple TV (Ethernet) or Iphone/Ipad (Wi-Fi) to the same 10 speakers, I have similar problems. But the sound does not stop, but simply disconnects several speakers and they need to be connected again. There are no problems when playing on wired speakers. Through Chromecast, Roon transmits sound with even more problems (audio stuttering). I don’t have Roon Ready devices. I will try to play the sound with Roon on only 4 Airplay speakers and write to you about the results.
Previously, I contacted my local Apple support team for advice on this issue. They reported that the problem is not on Apple’s side and there are no restrictions on playback even on 10 speakers. Is it possible to write about your problem to the head office of Apple to resolve it and what is the best way to do it?
