Losing the will to go on

I’d like to know whether others, like me, continually have problems with Roon stability.

Every 6 to 8 weeks something happens that sends Roon in to a tail spin and I have to spend hours trying to get it to work again.
Why can’t it just work consistently.

This isn’t much to go on. I’ve been running Roon for about a year now and I’ve had very few issues. Care to elaborate?

Hi @Richard_Horsley , in the beginning I had this as well. For me it turned out to be mainly a wifi issue. Read the following tips only if you are using wifi:

Avoid using wifi or if impossible (like for me) create very reliable access points: wired and close to the endpoint so there is a good signal.
Get prosumer networking hardware (for example Omada or Unifi).
Use 2.4GHz instead of 5GHz if wifi is unstable.
To this end, create separate SSID’s for 2.4 and 5 GHz.
Buy decent wifi dongles for your streamers if built-in wifi is sub-par.

Yes. I did hate it for a while. Now my network is fixed and I understand how to keep endpoints and core happy it’s fabulous. But I know far more about networking protocols and Linux than I ever intended to.

No, it’s been ROCK solid (pun intended) for years. Just wire everything.

Roon user for nearly 4 years now. Make sure your Roon server is connected to Ethernet. Wifi is too unreliable.

Roon user for 8 yrs , 5 on a Desktop i7-7700 16 gb and HDD 3 on ROCK i7 32 gb . Use it absolutely every day . One headphone amp zone, no DSP no funny formats

NEVER a technical issue in all that time

Ethernet everything and Restart server software occasionally

Hi Geoff,
I raised a tech support request, yesterday and no response.

Network devices not showing as System Outputs in Roon (ref#41HIJA)

I’ve had Roon for a couple of years, first year no problems at all. Now every few weeks.

Roon Labs staff will return to office on Monday. There is no (official) support over the weekend.

Plus it’s ambitious to expect instantaneous response 24/7. Roon has improved its response times of late or so it seems

The forum members often get the solution before support !

What is your server? That is generally where the issues start. I have a NUC and it’s been super stable.

Turned out to be a privacy setting in MacOS that somehow got changed…

I can only surmise that this was updated as part of a DOT release that I recently installed.

Thanks for peoples input, much appreciated

I’ve used a NUC running ROCK and then a Nucleus 1 for six years, both wired to the network, which is a 250 mbit cable modem connected to a Google nest pro wifi mesh.

The end points are all wireless except for the main system which is wired using a Raspberry pi running Ropieee and then a 4th gen Bluesound node connected to a Schiit Ygdrassil DAC.

In all that time, the system has been rock solid, with no large or small issues. So I’m not sure if it’s because of the network, the Roon servers, or the wired connection, but it never misses a beat.

One last thing, all of the mesh wifi access points are wired. Not sure if that’s important.

While I enjoyed Mac Mini as a server I went NUC and it’s super legit

Happy to hear you got it sorted. I would recommend a fanless N100 mini pc from Aliexpress as a dedicated ROCK/MOCK machine if you want to take all the fuss away completely.

Glad it’s sorted. I’ve only jumped on this to echo the others who’ve recommended a dedicated ROCK/NUC server solution. Roon is a sophisticated application. If we want its benefits, we all know we’ve committed to an ongoing cost. It’s a false economy to piggyback it on top of another OS - spend a few £$ on a second-hand NUC.

(I have a secondhand Intel NUC, four Roon-ready endpoints (three wifi, one wired) and three others (all wifi) that use Airplay. BT mesh wifi (one wired, three wifi) and a bog-standard internet connection. I’ve had one major problem with some KEF LSXs (notorious for network issues, apparently) that turned out to be a DLNA glitch - otherwise, it’s been seamless)

I’ll make a “pitch” - I have bought 3 computers from GMKtec - one from Amazon, two straight from China. They’ve been flawless, and DIRT cheap. One N97, one N150, and one K10 to make a decently powerful 13i9 linux box.

If you’re NUC-curious, read this thread:

Same here…my Roon Rock on its Intel Nuc works fine without any trouble.
Networking problems are usually the root cause of many Roon related niggles.

I agree. Every time there’s an update, I lose an audio zone until I reboot my iMac. And occasionally, Roon just becomes unresponsive: I can navigate to an album, but clicking on the Play arrow does nothing. More and more, I simply fall back on Qobuz – a less desirable interface, but it always works. No drama.
