Mac Mini Security Update followed by lost connection to roon remote

Dear Support Staff:
Long time roon Life Subscriber. Roon remote has always connected easily with bouts of lost connection. After the most recent security update for High Sierra on my Mac Mini, I launched roon and the remote would not connect. After checking all the WiFi networks were correct, the looking for roon core would after forever find my iPad Air 2 and only once requested I log in. After logging in, instead of connecting me it asked about more connections. I was not able to move from that position. For the last several times, on my iPad Air 2 looking for roon core, it finds it but red, orange and fails to connect. I have never had such a complete disconnect. It ruined my DJ session for my wife taking massage on Fridays as she does. What is the bloody problem? I am an experienced user. My equipment is all in working order the network settings are all correct. But the remote connection which is “Yes” to won’t connect. I am sorry, but this is unacceptable.
Best Richard
PS
I have made sure security/firewall etc is all properly set. But the software won’t connect.

If I turn off Firewall on my Mac Mini, the remote app connects immediately. However, leaving my firewall off is not a safe setup. And the firewall has always been left on over the years. So what is causing my remote app to lose connection if the Firewall is “on” when for years this was never an issue. I am very uncomfortable leaving the firewall off. What has changed with roon? Or Apple? Or? But i am not happy with the present state of roon’s build, which is the latest. I really need to confer with support to be able to use the remote with the firewall on.
Please advise.
Best,
Richard

As soon as I activate the firewall on my Mac mini, the remote connection is lost. Therefore, I have to choose between a highly valuable remote app not working or leaving my Mac Mini firewall off and thus vulnerable and this was never an issue until today with the latest Apple update for security. I haven’t a clue what to do about this given the remote app never responded this way. Can I please get some valuable support as a life subscriber who needs and relies on roon and the remote app on my iPad Air 2.
Best,
Richard

Have you tried adding exceptions to the firewall settings? In this case Roon and RAATServer.

In the Firewall tab, with it On, click the Firewall Options button and add Roon and RAATServer.

See if that helps.

Cheers, Greg

Dear Greg,
That has been done long ago. Greg, my remote app has been set up and the firewall has been set up for years now. It’s clearly the following: With roon and RAAT Server added (long time), suddenly with the new update from Apple, Security Update 2019-003, May 17, 2019, if the Firewall is set to “On” not able to connect. If the Firewall is set to off, the remote app connects immediately. Look, Greg, I am not unfamiliar so please can I get some serious support. I appreciate your suggestion, but if you read my post, you’d know that all has been set up as it should. I need a senior support person. And as a Lifetime Subscriber who suddenly can no longer use the remote app unless I open my Mac Mini to danger without the firewall, and given the remote app has always worked with the firewall set to on, something else is going on. And I am devastated that the remote app is only available with my Mac Mini, High Sierra 10.13.6 kept up-to-date with the latest software, and maintained, only without the firewall set to on. Need to be contacted by a senior support person, please.
Best,
Richard

I’m just a user like yourself trying to offer a suggestion. If you said that the exceptions were already added previously, instead of just “being set up as it should”, I would not have responded.

I’ll tag @support for you.

Cheers, Greg

Thank you Greg. I guess I summed it up and should have specified that roon and RAAT Server have been added long ago. I appreciate you tagging support for me. I am rather frustrated and tonight’s music session was ruined for me and my wife. So if my tone was inappropriate, my apologies. You understand I have been a lifetime subscriber since the beginning of roon.
Best,
Richard

Dear All:
It looks like I fixed the problem. The problem is new to me. Apparently when I launch my Mac Mini the OS or some program queries me about a VPN and to change my firewall setting. This time I elected to allow and saved it. Having done so, I then launched roon and after roon was fully launched, I clicked on the remote app which connected in a second. This is all new to me. I had never been prompted until recently and I still don’t know which program, i.e., Apple OS High Sierra 10.13.6 is making the request or some other security software. But with the firewall “on” and, of course, roon and RAAT Server already long time added to the firewall programs allowed to connect, everything has returned to Normal (?). In any event, I am still not sure what has caused this new interface, but I am back with a working remote app connecting to the roon core. To Greg. Thank you. To dylan, I have to connect and ask you to never mind.
Best,
Richard

Glad you got it sorted.

I just updated my Mac Mini to the latest software (although it is on Mojave), turned on the Firewall and, after asking to allow Roon, RAATServer and RoonAppliance, my iPad connected properly. So all good on my system too.

Cheers, Greg

Me too! Though I still don’t understand what changed such that I have to alter my Firewall to accept a VPN when I had never had to before. Because my Mac Mini is a early 2011 Thunderbolt i7, Apple won’t let me upgrade to Mojave. So I must remain with High Sierra. Given I have invested in an SSD HDD and UpTone Audio’s internal power supply and fan controller and the Mac Mini is connected to and powered by UpTone Audio’s JS-2, I would have to redo what is akin to open heart surgery on the newer Mac Mini. Now if I could discover what started the requirement for that alteration of the Firewall for the VPN so I know the reason for this rather perplexing change that gives me no details of what has triggered this change. I use a Norton Core Router which replaced the Apple AC Time Machine/Wireless Router which was in fine working order to begin with. In any case, glad you’re up and running with no problems, and now I am too. Thank you again for the practical suggestions.
Enjoy the music,
Richard

Just two cents from another user, not a Roon tech.
I’d worry more about understanding why this is happening rather than about connecting to Roon.

Slim,
Agreed. But I don’t know how to troubleshoot this. AND, the remote connection is lost again. So the fix I thought had efficacy doesn’t.
I opened my Firewall and removed roon and RAAT SERVER.
Then rebooted and added roon back. But did not see RAAT SERVER, which surprised me. Where do I find RAAT SERVER to add back?
Best,
Richard

Greg,
Just launched roon and the same problem is back. I removed roon and RAAT Server from Firewall. Rebooted and added roon back but couldn’t find RAAT Server among the applications on my Mac in Applications Folder.
I don’t know how to troubleshoot this!!!
Best,
Richard

Ya see, if you didn’t subscribe to a VPN, and you probably didn’t, then this query about a VPN could be because you’ve been hacked. You need to get to the bottom of why this is happening.

It’s been awhile since I used my Mini and macOS, but maybe someone else can chime in about the VPN query in general, rather than how it relates to any Roon problem.

I have Norton Core as my Router and Norton Security Deluxe and have done scans. I need to sort this out. Even with the firewall off, now remote will not even connect and can’t be located. I am hoping support can help me!
Best,
Richard

Hi Richard,

I’ll tag @support to give you a hand. I’ve removed the Solved notification.

Cheers, Greg

Thank you, Greg. Nothing I have tried or even turning off firewall allows the remote app to connect. Hoping to hear from support.
Best,
Richard

Dear All:
That includes Greg, Slim_Fishguttz (that’s the first time I actually read and heard the name in my head), and dylan. I feel like the boy who cried “Wolf”. Although I did encounter a sudden change in the tethering of the roon core and the remote app, and although I noticed for the first time a VNC (NOT VPN) window, what I missed was Norton Security which for some reason was greyed out so my attention had to be elsewhere. The rest is good news for me, and first let me express my appreciation to all for the attention and hand holding. Here’s the gist of it.
First I was not hacked. Second I know this because I phoned the Norton Core team and was routed to their specialists. Unless you don’t believe in specialists (smile), my higher tier support person helped me sort out the matter.
Because I own a Norton Core Router, and Norton Security Deluxe. Apple allows sharing and Norton protects their clients when they share. Although I have had their Router and New Software for several months now, the window that confused me only showed up a few days ago. There were others. I know the rules say don’t discuss in support pages. So let me sum up: Norton apparently was protecting me from me by blocking the remote app on my iPad Air 2 even though it’s been months without doing so. Perhaps a recent update may explain the difference. With the support person on the phone the remote app connected to the core in a second. The settings for the VNC are correct, and FTP Passive are also correct. If the remote app and the core experience difficulty finding each other, it won’t be from my inexperience, but perhaps from what I’ve read at this community, others also experience intermittent difficulty connecting. At the moment, I am well done. And appreciate all who came forward. I’ll let dylan know. Greg, having tagged me over to support, is there anything I need to do besides, once again, confess my errors in perception and a slight independent difficulty with newer stages of protection that occurred without any notice to me. I don’t know where to find RAAT Server to install. I tried to find it by doing a search. If anyone knows, where to find that program. I’d appreciate a leg up.
With appreciation,
Richard

Yeah, I’ve called Norton in the past myself.

Hey Richard,

Glad you figured it out. Regarding RAATServer, don’t worry about it. If the Firewall asks to allow it, then say yes. Or, if you have trouble locating an Endpoint (Zone), then let us know.

If you notice anything strange, then report back.

Cheers, Greg
