Mac USB to TEAC UD-501 DAC no sound... has anyone solved/sorted?

Moved a few things around, and I have a mac mini roonserver in my den. Don’t listen in there too often these days, but thought I’d try to go out from the Mac’s USB to the TEAC UD-501 DAC.

But no sound.

  • Roon recognizes the USB DAC as an audio endpoint

  • I can see the USB DAC in the Sound control panel of system settings on the mac

  • It plays just fine using different platforms/sources (YouTube, Qobuz, etc…)

  • It shows the signal path as if it’s going to play

But it just sits there and doesn’t play.

Found this locked thread from eight years ago that discusses the same behavior…

(And I don’t think I got anywhere unchecking “Exclusive mode”…)

Not the end of the world, as I can use a little Raspberry Pi streamer to use as an endpoint, but just wondered if anyone’s made any headway on it.

my UD-507 works fine my M4 Mac through usb (front and rear). Exclusive mode works and I also get DoP DSD256 without issues at all.

Enable Integer Mode. This improves performance by bypassing CoreAudio processing, allowing bit-perfect, direct output to your DAC“

To enable Integer Mode in Roon (macOS only), go to Settings > Audio, click the gear icon next to your DAC, select Device Setup, and toggle on Enable Integer Mode.

yep, that’s already selected by default for this output

Often times when it shows as playing in Roon, it’s just a matter of insufficient volume. Have you already checked your volume settings / levels?

It’s not playing. It sits at 0:00 at the beginning of the progress bar, not moving.

Thank you.

I found a workaround.

I use HQPlayer occasionally in my main system, and i thought I’d test it out from the mac mini to the TEAC DAC, and sure enough, it works just fine.

So it appears that it’s oddly just a roon problem. When HQPlayer becomes the actual output stream, it seems to work just fine from the Mac to the DAC.

Anyway, it’s an extra step, but pretty insignificant. Sounds good, too!
