80% of all extreme metal I add to Roon (mostly Death & Black) is only tagged with the “Pop/Rock” genre.
What is the reason for this, its not just some underground metal bands with 10 listeners - its big acts within the genre.
What is the source for Roon?
Can I as a user fix the issue at its core by adding info in a central database?
And why is it designed so that we need to go through the pop/rock genre to get to metal? It should be its own genre
Sources for Roon are MusicBrainz and TiVo (which is essentially AllMusic plus additional non-US data) and I guess you can edit this in their databases.
Because that’s how the metadata sources did it, I suppose. Personally, I totally agree that metal is a subgenre of Rock and this is not exactly a minority view:
If you disagree, you are free to navigate to the Metal genre in Roon and configure it to be separate top level genre:
Thanks for the link on how to configure Metal to be top level genre - makes navigation a bit smoother.
I checked some released on All Music and it seems they love the pop/rock genre on lots of extreme metal releases - strange they dont atleast add heavy metal as genre tag.
Roon uses as its starting point the Tivo/Allmusic genre hierarchy. You can see it here:
and drill down to dozens of metal styles:
Depending on taste you are free in roon to change this hierarchy although I am not sure what the effects would be in terms of roon discovery and recommendations.
