New Nucleus not available outside USA: Available in Canada as of October 11th 2024

As an adjunct to my other post (but worthy of its own), ROCK New Nucleus are only currently an option if you’re based in the USA and can get a Nucleus One or Titan.

Because Nucleus (Nuclei?) aren’t officially distributed in the UK or Europe yet.

And you can’t get an Intel NUC, only ASUS ones, which aren’t supported.

As someone who needs to update his core that puts me between a … ROCK Nucleus and a hard place (groan).

[Moderator clarification : ROCK is a self installed software (RoonOS & Roon Server) and should not be conflated with Nucleus hardware.]

Don’t forget about an install on any Linux, Mac, or Windows OS system.

Same problem here :smiling_face_with_tear:

I wanted to buy Asus NUC 14 Pro, CPU Intel® Core™ Ultra 7 155H

I’m not a techie so Linux isn’t an option for me. So it would have to be Windows. Which costs an extra £120 and brings with it all the issues associated with using Windows (the need for virus software etc). Basically I’m sold on the ‘appliance’ argument for ROCK. Hence my frustration at not being able to use it. I even just revisited the Audirvana website just now to see where things are with that…

I agree, it would be nice if Roon, or someone who knows, added the Asus versions or a cross reference to the list of “supported” NUC devices.

I still think a properly outfitted MAC Mini will get you everything you need and nothing you don’t.

That’s been true in times long gone.

Yesteryear gospel as well.
You’ll be able to get Win home licenses for a small fraction of full retail.
I used a fanless, silent, auto login/start Windows Roon server for five years without any of the purported glitches, secured faultlessly by Windows Defender, receiving painless updates, as well as an upgrade from Win 10 to 11.

Closely following the Roon forum for all that time leaves me suspicious regarding the appliance character.
But I do understand the wish for something like that - one can always dream …

If I could not get a Roon Nucleus or a supported NUC, I would go with a Mac Mini.

Personally, I run a Roon server on Nucleus, Mac Mini (late 2014), and Dell Windows 11. They all work well.

I purchased a ‘new to me’ Intel Nuc on that big auction site.
Although just an i5 proc it runs my library/Qobuz very well!.

This information is available in ‘Roon Software Setup’ here …i used it to chose which Nuc would be suitable.

I agree the theory and the reality of ‘appliance’ don’t match. ROCK gets closer than anything else though.

I’ve seen W11 Home for considerably less than the £120 list price. Like £30 or so. Which looks too good to be true. Which usually means it is. Thoughts?

Does it need to be a new model? Plenty of used NUCs that match the recommended ROCK models out there on eBay and CeX.

I can buy a Win11 Pro license for <50€ on Amazon which works and is official.
However, I have not been able to configure autologin on Win11 with current updates. And hence Roon stops every now after Windows has updated. And by that time I am usually in the car trying ARC.
Roon needs to start as a service w/o login on Windows. But then less Rock hardware would be sold…

Try the steps given in this article:

I tried that and lots of other links. It does not work with Win11latest and Windows online account login.

With Win 11 Home it absolutely does work on my server PC.

Honestly Phil, there is no more of a challenge installing a modern Linux than Windows.
I do both regularly and Linux has become so easy.
The instructions for things like DietPi are also excellent now

I had this problem (netplwiz not giving the option to automatically login) on my Win11 pro machine.

I solved it and reported the solution here:

Hi Phil - I switched from Windows 11 to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Linux and it has been rock solid. I was unable to get Windows to auto login or be stable after updates so I gave up on it. I am somewhat technical but the various ways to achieve a fully automated appliance-like environment were too much hassle - registry edits anyone? My suggestion is go for a decent mini PC and install something like Linux Mint where you can install Roon server without the command line. The instructions on Roon’s site for Linux are incorrect and I had to get help from the forum with Ubuntu commands but I believe with Linux Mint you can avoid the hoops I had to jump through. Best of luck.
