New Nucleus Titan?

Isn’t the free version of ESXi being canceled?

I suppose you can move to Proxmox.

If you have a valuable file collection without some for of adequate back up then you deserve what you get should a drive fail.

Anyone with any experience of IT will tell you that drives fail !!

The Nucleus , and I assume the Titan exposes a folder on Windows so allowing back up of it’s internal drive

I’dont know if the free version of ESXI still available, i got a free version VM with the Nas

Mike you just proved my point, it isn’t turnkey only the Roon part. The MTF is normally 5 years not 2 of 3, and like samsung ssd’s but not the QVO series. I can lose 4 drive’s without loss of data/music and can easily replace a drive and the nas rebuilds on his own. so i like to see at least a mirror config in the nuculeas

Sadly, there won’t be any updates or further enhancements. I assume sooner or later with subsequent Synology updates, ESXi will no longer be supported.

I don’t know why Broadcom has decided to do this. I can only guess that since it makes no income it needs to go.

The Nucleus is a music server nothing more nothing less. The OS is stripped down such that only what is needed is included. Indeed what is inside a Nucleus should be none of our business it’s a black box, Plug n Play.

What you are after with built in NAS functions is well beyond the scope of a simple server which is what Nucleus strives to be . I don’t even know what a mirror config is , I have never used a NAS

Anything additional should be under the control of the owner otherwise you are building a complex computer where a very simple one is called for . After all a simple external USB drive will assure safety of your precious files. I use 2 x 4Tb Seagate USB drives, sync’ed weekly, and have never had any issues , or indeed any need to use the BU (tempting fate now)

Just my 2p

Install an internal SSD to store your Roon music files and use an attached USB HDD to do Roon database backups. What could be easier?

In addition, keep a backup of your music files on another computer or HDD somewhere. And if you have a really valuable music library (valuable to you), keep a copy of your backup drive offsite.

What, we can’t be curious?

Curious yes , demanding no , it’s Roon’s proprietary stuff

What are you suggesting that the Nucleus Titan is capable of installing Windows ?

Why would Roon make a very specific music server capable of acting as a normal PC., the whole idea of the Roon OS was to strip out anything unnecessary to music serving.

If it were a NUC then yes but there is no evidence that it is a NUC .

I am not even sure you could repurpose a Nucleus by installing Windows and that is derived from a NUC.

Stop thinking DIY , Roon is now part of a major international hardware manufacturing corporation , there is no need to use “off the shelf PC based” components, I doubt any of the other Harman products use re-purposed off the shelf mother boards a la NUC.

No its not any longer , it’s about producing a saleable product into a market place.

As long as they keep providing installable software (server and or ROCK) we can continue to use whatever DIY computers we want but watch this space the Nucleus will be a locked off environment with nothing of it’s contents declared.

Yes I could be wrong but Harman/Samsung will need something out of this acquisition …

I am more than happy with my server

Sounds like unreasonable to re-invent the wheel when all is needed is a bog standard PC design. So choosing an existing platform as a NUC (or something similar) and just modifying it slightly (passive cooling) and add a bespoke Linux flavour would be a smart decision.

What on earth makes you think it’s custom made for Roon only? Looks like a standard mini pc in fancy case like the originals where. No way it’s bespoke these type of boards are two a penny hence why you can pick up an n100 pc for about £250 fully loaded.

As mentioned, i would have the choice whether to have a divorce because of the server or the wiring (the Linn would be accepted).

If I should pay $3700, I like to see the following implemented:

  1. An SFP/SFP+ cage
  2. RoonOS support for HQplayer
  3. The 1st HDMI is fully supporting Atmos output
  4. The 2nd HDMI support Atmos and/or bluray input.

I like that you can choose your own PS.

Hi Bill, some more advice regarding backing up. It is essential to backup two things.

  1. The local music files you have purchased or ripped. Typically FLAC files
  2. The ROON data base

That’s my list too.

Of course my Nucleus Plus went out of it’s two year warranty this past February.

Interestingly, I don’t see any specs on the Titan page. No memory or CPU info. Am I missing something?

I think you will find Roon are deliberately fighting shy of declaring things like that heading for the “Black Box” appliance principal. Do you ask Cambridge Audio about the internals of their kit ?

There was a big discussion around the Nucleus 1 about such specs.

Aside from not buying gear from them, I would expect to find some info in a review. So many people pop the lid during the review.

There’s generous info available for my VTL, DCS, and Jeff Rowland gear. I don’t see the need for obfuscation. Sooner or later someone will post the info.
