No more Roon software updates for me

The advice I got from them was well meaning, and I appreciate the help, but if I have solved this, I did it on my own.

But I will follow the advice I offered at the top: No more Roon (or Apple) updates for me.

Thanks Mike. I too am pretty much all-in with Apple (iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Apple Watch, EarPods, Apple TV - even, for a while, an Airport router). However, I don’t need 5.1 and I can use the iPad for visuals. I’ve been impressed by the way ROCK just sits there and does its job with almost no need for intervention apart from an occasional update. For me, it’s a no-brainer but I understand why it’s not for you. Each to their own!

Enjoy the music!

I agree that an iPad can deliver the visuals, but it is no comparison to a 65” Sony LCD. I know I can buy a NUC that will deliver 95% of what I want. But the mini is paid for, and I am willing to struggle to keep it in my system for the final 5%. But that could change.

Simple answer to that one, “use case”. Some of us are not yet retired and work in multiple locations requiring travel and staying in various locations around the globe for sometimes extended periods. For me the best solution for this is when away from home having my Macbook Pro running Roon Server, it is specced to handle the daily work demands and then some (128GB RAM, 4TB internal SSD). This enables me to travel with my music library wherever I go and to ensure enjoyable playback I pop a Chord Hugo 2 / 2 Go combo and Focal Utopia headphones in my travel bags to ensure decent SQ. (sometimes T+A Solitaire T only if I want to travel light). ARC is not a realistic proposition for me, I often spend 2-3 months away from home and its limitations are jarring compared to having my music server with me.

@Mike_Rife My main concern about overlaying Roon Server on another OS (Mac or Windows) is the possibility of issues arising exactly like the one you’ve described. My MacBook is 5 years old which increasingly makes me nervous whenever I’m asked to upgrade MacOS. Adding Roon Server updates is (for me) an unnecessary risk.

@David_Moore2 I take your point. However - I’m currently sitting literally on the other side of the world from my Roon server with pretty basic broadband at both ends and Arc is working like a dream (including DSP). So why would I need my server and library to be here?

My experiences in various places (offshore in the middle of the ocean or in remote areas onshore with 150 people sharing a bandwidth limited satellite connection, or in places like Myanmar, Somalia and other supposedly more developed countries) is somewhat different, comes down to use case. Also not a fan of any remote UI on an iPhone screen…too limited.

Your diagnosis seems to be the most likely suspect. I am back to a working system. If and when I lose a zone, I know the current 30 second fix. For now.

if you have a fix, could be cool to let others know what you did. (Or maybe it was revealed above? Scrolled up and didn’t see anything conclusive.)

The “30 second fix” as I call it has been posted before, but here it is:

Click on the Apple icon at top left of screen

Open System Settings>Privacy & Security>Local Networks

Inside the Local Networks section you will find “Roon” and “RoonServer”

Both should be toggled “On.” If so, toggle them both “Off” and wait 30 seconds. Then toggle both back “On.”

That should restore the zones, at least temporarily.

The interesting thing would be if it sticks now. It’s normal to have to allow this once - that’s what permissions are for. However, with macOS 15 before 15.3, the problem was:

  • macOS should show a prompt to ask for the permission, and it didn’t do that reliably
  • Even if the permission was already granted, it didn’t seem to stick (even if the toggle was enabled)

The vast majority of the user feedback was that both things seemed to have been fixed with macOS 15.3. That’s why Roon Labs considers the issue solved.

If you still have to repeat the dance (after doing it once after the 15.3 update), then this would surely be interesting to Roon Labs, because it means that for some reason it’s not fixed for everyone

Agreed. I will wait for further developments. Maybe then I will source a NUC.

I have been working with Connor from Roon support. Today l (we) got all six of my zones operational with a removal of all Roon software from my mini, installation of new server, and a new, complete setup.

Looks good; as usual, the test is whether or not it sticks. I am hopeful for the first time in a while.

Interesting.
I also had Roon still installed (but deauthorized) on my MacMiniM1 when installed Roon on my “new” iMac2019 and because the MMM1 was used for HQ Player was also connected to the network. So it could be that the inactive Roon on the MMM1 disturbed the active Roon on the iMac?

Just to increase my own tension about this issue, the last two Roon updates and the single Apple update all three fried my endpoints. Either I live with it or I get a NUC or a Nucleus One. No decision yet.

Luckily my MMM1 is quite stable at the moment.
So I guess I will wait a bit with the next MacOS update.

Good luck, my friend!

Never a problem with any of these. Nucleus and late 2014 Mac Mini connected via ethernet. Dell and NucBoxG5 connected by WIFI. I never click “update all” and update one at a time, if that makes any difference, IDK.

My main listening room RPi4 > Meridian Prime is connected by WIFI as is my “away from home” RPi4 > Mojo2. At home, RPi4 > Mojo 2 and Oppo 203 > Bose are connected by ethernet. My point is, WIFI can work well if there is a strong signal and little interference.

Why not try a different Roon server? NucBoxG5 is very inexpensive and works well.

EDIT: I bought the 12/256

Jim:

Thanks for the recommendation. I haven’t worked with a windows operating system since, oh, about 1989 or so. I will likely try my old 2014 Mac mini, stripped down just for Roon; or I will grab a late renewed mini. I guess I am a little stubborn, but I have a 2018 in my office config that I love. Can’t believe the other 2018 is less reliable, but it is.

Do you have a brand/model of a NUC box g5 you would recommend? Appreciate your input, sir!

I have the exact same NUC running my Roon server. It is running on Roon ROCK. And it is running rock solid.

3 streamers, a soundbar and, through Roon ARC, an iPhone as endpoints and it runs great. It handles my 97k track library easily, Qobuz + local, and is quick and quiet.

It sits behind my TV right next to the 3 tb hard drive holding my music collection. :slightly_smiling_face:
