No more Roon software updates for me

Ditto, happens after every update. The only endpoint remaining is always the IEM plugged directly into my Mac mini. All Chromecast devices gone until I restart Roon.

Here, too. The only improvement in the problem is that I have stopped ranting around the house when it happens. My wife is as tired of hearing about it as I am of having to deal with it.

Indeed it is not, but nobody said it is. It is in fact so common that there is a post pinned to the top of the Support category just for that:

It’s indeed annoying. I’m not sure who is affected (clearly not just a few, though) - I am not, for instance, but my server is on ROCK and just the remote on macOS. IIRC I might have had to toggle the switch off and back on again one time after the Sequoia update, but definitely never again.

I have no idea if Roon could do something to make the network permissions stick, or what/where the root problem is. However, as the pinned post says, they are working on a fix. It’s been taking quite some time, arguably way too long. I have no idea how complicated the fix is, but the pinned post does say that ā€œit’s quite involvedā€. Fingers crossed that it will be done soon.

(There were definitely issues in macOS when this security feature was introduced in Sequoia (very late in the release cycle, I might add; not the best work by Apple). We ran into something similar at work with the software we develop for macOS. We don’t use the network permission but we do use the folder access permission. What happened was that the macOS dialog asking for the permission didn’t come up reliably and the setting was not reliably saved once enabled. Our developers filed a bug report with Apple and this did get better with subsequent Sequoia updates, but I’m not quite sure what changed and if our developers had to made changes as well.)

I am hopeful. And clueless. At least, when the worst happens, I can hold my tongue, work the sliders, and anticipate a short term patch for what seems an interminable glitch.

Fun with computers.

Unless I’m being rather dim here, which of course is quite possible…

Could you not set up a full rock server using a NUC (ROCK). Have your MacMini as a remote? This way, it’s plugged into the TV, you’ll have full software control, and you can set it up as a zone and still have the 5.1 surround sound.

This way, the system is completely dedicated, can update without issues. I’m a little late to the topic, and I saw back in March that you finally got the MacMini running.

You may have a point, but …

My budget, my wife, my ego, and my happy Apple stock each have a say in this.

I see no reason to purchase and config another device when between Roon and Apple a fix can be had. If each of these corporate brain trusts would put out appropriate effort, this could be solved in a week.

In the meantime, I know how to work the sliders manually.

It is now almost built into my startup protocol.
