Now Playing Some Jazz [2021-2022]

One of the baker’s dozen that I own from the “Giants of Jazz” series, circa 1979, from Time/Life Records. Each one had three LPs and a nice booklet with a bio, some essays and very informative notes on the music. The sound was and is first rate for historical recordings. A fine example of what a historical reissue should be.

Most of my vinyl boxed sets (there are a few CD sets in there as well) and a small portion of my vinyl collection.

Good god, I’ve got some of those, too.

Not sure what to do with the cartons of vinyl rotting away in my basement.

Well you could, God forbid, try playing a few of them :grin:

followed by this absolutely wonderful recording, which, luckily, is available on Tidal and Qobuz:

As well this recording, which is kind of a companion piece to “Regeneration”, also available on Tidal and Qobuz;

Oh wow, where have I been all this recording’s life? I have tired on some of Jarrett’s solo stuff of late, but this just kicks ass on so many levels. It rocks, R&B style occasionally, goes full bananas pounding and you can hear the piano actually cracking under the strain, and then heads back to ECM land, and then it repeats. This review is so right on. Such a long pair of sets, so rewarding to listen to again and again.

I’ll mention that this is one of the places where my dependence on Roon’s star ratings sometimes fails me. I generally “get” the stars assigned to major albums, and if I disagree a bit I can work it out. But when important albums are unrated, I sometimes just miss them. And then I find them later. C’est la vie, there’s too much music and it’s-a-joy to find something unexpected. But man I wish this album had had a rating and a review.

A very strong candidate for Jazz New Release of the Week, available in multiple formats on Tidal and Qobuz

What just makes me dumbfounded is, while this recording is available on Tidal and Qobuz, it is only available in standard CD resolution. one would figure that a recording as important and historic as this one would be available in high resolution. Well at least I still own an original all analog pressing which I give a listen to later today.

Original, all analog pressing and sounding very good indeed.

Bonus vinyl and another original pressing:

“Ruta and Daitya”, which was recorded back in 1972 or 1973, features Jarrett playing some electric piano, which he claimed to absolutely hate. Sounds pretty good to me. :grin:

This one really surprised me since I had no expectations one way or the other. I have always liked Kurt Vonnegut’s work so i figured that I would give this album a listen since it’s a new release available on Tidal and Qobuz. Really nice compositions and some very fine playing. Overall a very rewarding recording. Highly recommended.

An excellent new release available on Tidal and Qobuz. I know absolutely nothing about this recording nor about the musicians. Nor I could not find any information about it. For now just enjoy the music and hopefully we can fill in the details later since with music this good plenty of listeners will be asking for more information (and music).
