88633 tracks

Description of Issue

Performance is wanting: it takes up to a minute for a simple search (“The Beatles”) and skipping tracks is also up to 10 seconds. Can you please dial in to check?

That sounds networky, the skipping tracks is normally an indictor of network. It’s odd if everything is ethernet connected

Try rebooting everything including the network, do it in sequence and wait until the network is up before moving on .

88k on an i3 Nucleus should be OK

Thank you for the response.
Are there any temp files to be discarded on Nucleus?
Is there any optimization to be held?
Will there be a difference between an internal SSD to a USB SSD in terms of performance?

No temp files that I am aware of, the Nucleus is designed to be an appliance , no config, no adjustments etc. Any software updates are automagic !!

An internal SSD will be SATA and will by definition be quicker than an external USB drive. Beware though if you decide to put the drive inside (is it a SATA drive or an M.2 ?) .

If I am not mistaken you will need to format it via the Web Interface and then re-copy the files to it

Maybe some one can confirm that .

The internal drive would make things look neater as well. Mine is a NUC with a 4Tb Internal SSD

On the other hand, the extra speed isn’t really needed for music playback. And, you can use an external drive as a target for database backups, you can’t do that with an internal drive.

True , I have 2 drives , one internal *4Tb SSD) and a 5Tb USB External. I use that as the Backup target as you say

Is it possible your Nucleus is scanning your library? That’ll slow everything down. Check for a spinning circle in the upper right hand corner of your screen.

This is worrying. The Nucleus should like any other piece of neither gear be connected to a lan port not wan. Wan is the outward facing port to the internet on your router (Wide Area Network)and is before any security or firewall or routing. Are you sure that is correct?

Hi @Iftach_Landau,

Thanks for taking the time to write in!

If possible, could you please take note of a more specific date, time, and track when the issue occurs? Can you confirm your Nucleus is hardwired directly to your router via ethernet?

Please disable all extensions while we troubleshoot, and let me know if you still experience poor performance.

And with that, if you’d like, we can enable diagnostics mode for your account, which will send over a set of logs from your Core device automatically, and then upload to our servers for analysis.

If you’d rather do it yourself manually, please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader.

Lastly, what are your current DNS settings within the Nucleus? If you access the webUI of the device, could you share a screenshot of that here as well?

Thanks!

Hi Benjamin,

Thank you for your response

  • Nucleus is hardwired directly to the router via Ethernet.
I have a DECO Mesh, with the two units hardwired between rooms; the PC is also hardwired.

  • My only extension is rooWatch

  • I recently replaced the cables (short) to cat7, and there was some improvement.

  • Nucleus is slow in searches - when it finds the artist, the page with all info and albums takes a long time to populate.

  • Yes, please enable diagnostics mode

  • DNS settings is 9.9.9.9

  • A Webpage screenshot is enclosed

Thanks @Iftach_Landau ,

Lets see if refreshing your database helps in this case. Please follow the steps below:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon Database
  • Stop RoonServer from running in Nucleus’s WebUI
  • Navigate to your Nucleus’ Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RoonServer”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old”
  • Restart the RoonServer in the WebUI to generate a new Database
  • On the Roon Remotes, press “Use another Core” and connect to the new database

What happens if you temporarily update to Google or Cloudflare?

Hi @benjamin
I have come to the extreme of restoring the database from backup - indeed, the change was instantly noticeable!

But after two days and adding a few albums, the behavior is sluggish, with slow search, lazy skips, and play actions. Very frustrating.

Will change DNS back to 8.8.8.8

Thank you @benjamin. I have replaced the cable and port.
But does this affect the entire fabric?
The search is also slow when run from an iPhone, PC, etc. Up to a minute until the artist page is displayed.

Hi @Iftach_Landau,

Please restart your server twice and let me know if your issues persist. Thanks!

Hi @benjamin
It looks better now!

Thanks for letting me know @Iftach_Landau!

We’re currently investigating the issue further, but I wanted to share the tracking thread incase any updates get shared in the meantime:
