I'm having trouble with my Nucleus hardware

· The Nucleus boots up and I can connect to it in the Roon app without issue, but I have a question about configuration/storage/attached devices

Describe the issue

New Nucleus One, can connect, but goes into endless loading and database error

I've followed the Roon Troubleshooting, but to no avail : Troubleshooting - "There was an issue loading your database", endless loading at launch, or missing all audio devices."

I can’t connect to the Nucleus One based on it’s IP address I’m seeing in my router, it gives an unavailable error in the webbrowser.

I restored the backup from my Roon Rock from a USB HDD. After this the database needed to be updated which would take a while? After this I got the message that I had to update my Roon version because it was outdated, and then things went wrong…

I went back to my old NUC8 I3 running Roon Rock, that works…

Did you update your Nucleus first?

It prompted me to reconnect a database first. I only got the prompt to update after this…
There was no manual, I followed what I found YT and the help center, but apparently not good enough.

The Help Center has the Nucleus manual and it contains the necessary steps:

Setup

1. Connect and power up the Nucleus

The first step is making power and network connections and starting Nucleus.

2. Update Nucleus firmware

Before using Roon with Nucleus for the first time, it’s important to make sure your firmware is up to date.

Note: Not updating Nucleus firmware could lead to data loss or a failed migration.

3. Prepare your storage and audio devices

Nucleus will discover devices connected via USB, HMDI, and ethernet at any time, but it’s simplest to have these devices connected and powered on before you get started.

4. Start using Nucleus

Now that your equipment is connected, it’s time to install the Roon app (for Mac and Windows PC) and/or the Roon app for iPad, iPhone, and Android devices, and connect to Nucleus. From here, you can migrate an older Roon installation to Nucleus as well.

Okay, thanks, what’s next? How can I solve this please?

Well, you first need to reinstall Roon OS using the Reinstall button on the Web Administration page, but I see that you say:

Let’s see what @support can suggest as the next steps…

Hey @bernardb50,

Thanks for writing in and I’m sorry to hear about your new Nucleus One issues!

As a next step, could you please plug the Nucleus both into your router via ethernet again, and also plug in a monitor via HDMI, and share a screenshot of what you see?

Let’s also refresh your Nucleus database for now, since you do have a backup available, steps to follow below:

  • Stop RoonServer from running in Nucleus’s WebUI (if you can’t access the webUI still, power down the Nucleus to stop Roon Server from running)
  • Navigate to your Nucleus’ Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RoonServer”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old”
  • Restart the RoonServer in the WebUI to generate a new Database
  • On the Roon Remotes, press “Use another Roon Server” and connect to the new database

Don’t worry about restoring from a backup yet, and see if you’re able to gain access to Roon via your Nucleus first and foremost. We’ll be monitoring for your reply :+1:

Hey @benjamin
This is what I see:

I can now go to this url and was able to stop Roon

But when navigating to \nucleus\data there is no reaction.

Thx

Hi @bernardb50,
Windows paths can be case sensitive try this path \\NUCLEUS\Data\Storage\InternalStorage

Sorry

There may be two issues at play here (and I suspect it is the first):

  1. Changes that Microsoft has made to security means that it is no longer possible to access Nucleus or ROCK folders. Then the Group Policy Editor of Windows can be used to work around this.
  2. Windows File Explorer has a habit of not finding non-Windows devices in your network until it’s told to do so. So typing \\nucleusone\ in the address field (note: NOT the Search field) of File Explorer will kick Windows into displaying it again. In this situation, mapping a Windows drive to a folder in the Nucleus will pin it permanently in File Explorer as a drive on your PC.

If you have issue 1, then this article explains how to gain access to the folders on your Nucleus+:

Accessing a third-party NAS with SMB in Windows 11 24H2 may fail | Microsoft…

Changes to SMB security in Windows 11 24H2 release preview may prevent access to third party NAS appliances or other devices.

You want to start at step 6…

Ah yes - I missed the fact that your Topic title refers to a Nucleus One , but you had been using nucleus in the address… Glad you got there in the end…

A post was merged into an existing topic: Roon Server update failure during connection attempt (ref#040D1U) [Roon Investigating]

I restored backup anyway:

Back to start :man_police_officer:

Nucleus One up and running! Thank you team Roon! Have a great weekend :star_struck:

What was the fix?

I reinstalled everything following the previous instructions:

  • turn off Roon Server in the web UI
  • search for “Roonserver” folder in windows explorer
  • rename this folder to “Roonserver_old” (or so)
  • reboot Roon from the web UI
  • rerun the initial setup but skip all backup restore and streaming services prompts.
  • install the latest updates on all devices
  • restore backup & connect streaming service
