Describe the issue

I'm been a Roon user for 18 months with not even a single problem. Couldn't connect from any of my Android devices to my dedicated Rock server over the last three days. Saw lots of posts from other users with exactly the same problem. This has now been parly resolved (presumably by Roon) after all of my own attempts at self-help failed. Once into my account I found that all of my Live Music stations had disappeared from 'My Library' (but albums still there). Reinstated them all back into my Live Radio folder but, with one exception, none of the stations will play. 'Playback was interrupted because a track failed to load' is the error message that pops up. Help, Roon.

Describe your network setup

Dedicated Roon server preloaded with Rock fed by full fibre to the router. Ethernet feed to the Roon server. Networked devices all working perfectly.

Hi @Peter_Whitehouse,

Thanks for reaching out to us about this issue.

When you visit the Web Administration page for your ROCK, do you see any messages about a missing codec? We’re seeing traces in your logs that suggest this might be the case.

If so, please take a look at this article, which walks through how to resolve it:
Missing Codecs – Roon OS

Let us know if that helps or if you have any questions—we’re happy to assist further!

Thanks Daniel. Appreciated. Yes, the ‘missing codec’ alert is still there. It only appeared after, in frustration, I reinstalled the Rock software for the fourth time yesterday (Sunday). My problem is, although I’m reasonably savvy (used Unix back in the day - I’m in my seventies), I don’t know the commands to get past the first Linux screen and into the Roon app after I’ve hooked up the monitor, keyboard, etc. My build is completely standard. Any help would be welcome whilst I phone a few friends and the supplier! Thanks, Peter.

Hi @Peter_Whitehouse,

Thanks for reaching out. You can install the necessary codecs from the Web Administration page (the screen where you saw the warning about missing codecs).

After your NUC boots into ROCK, it will display an IP address. Enter that address into a web browser on another device to access the Web UI and complete setup, including installing the codecs.

You can find more details in our guides here:
ROCK Install Guide
Missing Codecs Help

Let us know if you have any questions — we’re happy to help!

Thanks Daniel. I’ve now read the relevant part of the ROCK Install Guide and can see exactly what you mean. I was thrown by the ‘Missing Codecs Help’ piece - on which I focussed - and didn’t realise the codecs are likely on the ROCK image that I’ve downloaded onto a flash drive. I’ll be trying it tomorrow.

Hi @Peter_Whitehouse,

I’m glad I was able to help clear that up for you. Let us know how it goes tomorrow!

Update… downloaded the ffmpeg file and copied it into the ROCK/Data/Codecs directory using the network share (only once I discovered I needed to use the smb prefix to get into the directory structure using my Linux PC, perhaps worth an update to your online help page for Linux users?). Unfortunately still only Radio Paradise (FLAC?) plays. Can’t listen to any of my UK stations. Next step is to see if my server supplier can help, unless you’ve any other ideas. Peter.

Hey @Peter_Whitehouse,

Thanks for the follow-up! We were able to review a diagnostic report from your Roon Server and see errors that still point to ffmpeg-related failures.

Some of the key failures looked like:

  • Warn: [audiosignal] [hls] error kicking off streaming: System.IO.IOException: Read failure: ExternalProcMissing → Roon is trying to decode an HLS stream but can’t because a required external tool or codec is missing.
  • I/O Failure While Opening Sound: hls://... Read failure: ExternalProcMissing → Confirms that playback failed at the point of opening the stream, not due to a network issue but due to missing support.

To confirm, did you download the latest static build of FFmpeg from:
https://johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/

If yes, then try rebooting your Roon Server and reinstalling Roon just in case a helper binary was corrupted. We’ll be monitoring for your reply! :+1:

Good evening Daniel, Benjamin or anyone else at Roon! STILL can’t get any non-FLAC live radio. After several installs of the johnvansickle file failed to work, my Roon/ROCK server supplier today sent me a copy of the FFMPEG file that they use as part of their software builds. I’ve loaded that into the Codec folder, still no joy with live radio even after a couple of reinstalls of ROCK from the server GUI, which is still showing “MISSING CODECS”. After 18 months of perfect performance this problem started after the weekend in mid-June when I (and also lots of other users, based on community postings) couldn’t find their servers from Android tablets and phones. Coincidence? Help! Thanks, Peter.

Hello @Peter_Whitehouse,

I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.

However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.

First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.

Feel free to post a screenshot of your codecs folder. Also. as you wrote you copied from Linux, make sure the file in the codecs folder has the executable bit set (previous discussion about this).

Thanks Vadim. Just tried again at 11.27 (UK time (10.27 GMT). Also, I’m using my Linux (Ubuntu) PC to copy and paste the file into the codec folder. I see that after your post BlackJack suggests that this may mean the executable bit set may not be there in FFMPEG file because of this. If so, I’m not sure how to fix this! Peter.

Hello, @Peter_Whitehouse,

Thank you for the update. According to the diagnostic data, the file exists and has sufficient access rights. Please restart your device and try again.

Thanks Vadim. Just tried again. Still getting the ‘playback failed, track failed to load’ message and the GUI is indicating ‘Missing Codes’.

Thanks for contacting me. I set the file as executable but still no joy. Opened the codec folder in Terminal, tried “chmod +x ffmpeg” and the response was “chmod: changing permissions of ‘ffmpeg’: Operation not supported”. Must emphasise it decades since I worked on UNIX with a black screen!

I don’t know, this all sounds suspicious when Roon support says file and rights are as expected but you still see ‘Missing Codes’ displayed. Do you have only one Server or could it be Roon support is looking at a different Server? I have no other ideas than the ones I already shared. Maybe you should share the screenshot of your codec folder so others can look if there is something suspicious.

Yep, only one server. Here’s a screenshot of my codec folder (if this is what you mean).

A detail view grafik would show more (details). Sometimes the file size is “fishy”. So there is not much to go on from that screenshot, this could be 0 bite file with the right name just created with touch. The name is as expected though.

PS: You might also post the link to the codec archive you downloaded, sometimes people download an archive for the wrong architecture.

Hi @Peter_Whitehouse ,

I am looking over the diagnostics of your account and it looks like your ROCK machine is actually a MOCK, it appears to be installed in different hardware than the one we tested: H610M-ITX/eDP. Which CPU are you using on it? It may have different architecture as @BlackJack noted. Also please note that MOCK solutions are not officially supported, you may get them to work but we have done no testing on this hardware.

This reply doesn’t help me. The key point is that my server has worked perfectly out of the box for 18 months. The codecs disappeared when I reinstalled the OS, for the first time ever, using the GUI about 17/18 days ago (during the weekend when there were lots of other posts regarding problems with Android devices being unable to find their Roon server, which led me to try the reinstallation). I am about to buy a replacement SSD with ROCK and codecs on it from my server supplier - I dare not risk trying a reinstall from a flash drive onto the existing SSD in case I lose the ability to listen to FLAC albums and radio - which still works perfectly.
