Describe the issue
Roon Nucleus direct usb connection to DAC works fine, but other networked zones to Apple Airport Time Capsule (ethernet) connected to Airport Expresses (via wifi) do not. I was away for 3 weeks on vacation at which time visa card expired and Roon cancelled my subscription. Upon returning home, the new replacement card was used and subscription was restored/reinstated. Upon starting Roon, the latest updates were installed and from that point, Airport devices no longer functioned - although they still appear under Settings - Audio. Prior to vacation everything worked great & had been for years. I've tried internet service provider tech support and network is performing as it should. No other network related issues - only Roon to Airplay 2. Every device, including Nucleus, has been rebooted/reset with no luck. The handshake between Roon and Apple Airplay devices appears to be broken and I simply cannot reconnect. Please advise thank you! Regards, Andy
Describe your network setup
All Ethernet connections work fine, only Apple Airport Express units (ver 7.8.1) via wifi do not.
I think the next step here is to enable some diagnostics on your account so our technical staff can get some more insight into what’s going on here.
However, before I enable this feature, I’d like to ask for your help ensuring we gather the right information.
First, can you please reproduce the issue once more and note the time at which the error occurs. Then respond here with that time, and I’ll make sure we review the diagnostics related to that timestamp.
Prior to vacation, everything was great & working smoothly
While on vacation, Roon subscription ended and couldn’t be auto renewed because of expired (actually it was compromised and replaced) Visa card.
Upon returning, I immediately added new replacement card and purchased another year subscription at 10:50a on March 11/26. I had to do the same with Tidal subscription as well.
Once everything was reset and Roon relaunched, it auto updated all devices.
Initially, nothing worked. In my dedicated listening room, my Roon Nucleus Rev B is direct connected via usb to my dac in main system. When attempting to play files either local or streamed, tracks would very loudly fast scan (like, under 1 second) to the end then repeat till album completed. I was ultimately able to troubleshoot and correct this, so that particular issue has been resolved, but required changing several playback settings in Muse, which I’d historically never had to adjust. Chat GPT helped me with this.
Upstairs, i have a pair of KEF LS50W’s and a number of in ceiling speakers connected to a dedicated amp as its own zone. The KEFS and the amp speak together via Apple Airport Expresses on the network. An Apple Airport Time capsule is connected to ethernet and direct connected to the ethernet port on the KEFS, enabling them to play on their own, independent of the in ceiling set up. That direct connection works fine, but the Airport Express connected zone that combines the KEFs and in ceilings does not. It does, however, work fine via Tidal connect, Spotify Connect and Apple Music, so the issue appears to be handshake related with Roon. I’ve rebooted everything in the chain and reset connections with no luck.
Apologies for the long winded response but I think that covers it.
Apologies for the confusion here! We’re unfortunately unable to see any activity back from the 11th of March, so we’re hoping you could reproduce the issue again and then share the track name, or date and time of when the issue occurs.
From there, we’ll be able to review a fresh Roon Server diagnostic report and take a closer look into what might be going on behind the scenes.
In the meantime, let’s see if clearing any stale cache from your Nucleus may help:
Move the contents of the /Cache folder elsewhere, like your desktop
Try restarting Roon and verify if the issue still occurs
With that, Apple Airport devices (Time Capsule/Express) utilize mDNS (Bonjour) for AirPlay. High-speed fiber routers sometimes handle these packets differently than older 20Mb service routers.
Check your Calix GigaSpire settings. Ensure IGMP Snooping is enabled. This helps the router manage "multicast" traffic (which AirPlay uses) more efficiently.
If your router has IPv6 enabled, try toggling it to "Link-local only" or "Off" temporarily. Older Airport Express firmware can sometimes struggle when a Roon Server tries to handshake over an IPv6 address instead of IPv4.
And since the devices appear in Settings -> Audio but won't play, Roon likely thinks they are still the "old" instances of those devices.
In Roon, go to Settings -> Audio.
Find the affected Airport Express zones and click the Gears icon -> Disable.
Physically unplug the Airport Express units for 30 seconds.
Plug them back in and wait for a green light.
Return to Roon and Enable them again. This often triggers a new security handshake.
Being that I’m far less of an IT guy than many of your users, and after too much wasted time & frustration I threw in the towel and purchased 2 new Bluesound Node Nanos to replace the Airports. Problem solved. For now.
