Ratings by sound quality?

So, do you think it possible that Roon could ever give us a sonic “star rating” along with the artistic “star rating” we have now?

I guess that makes sense, especially as many users have multiple copies of albums seeking the best recording.

Who would be the judge of this quality?

Why, MQA, of course.

Well, yes indeed… :joy:

Fire up your turntable or reel to reel and accept the rest is second best and list it as convenient.

My question came from the reviews in TASound. The reviewer gave both of the ratings. If Roon/Musicbrainz etc. gave sound ratings it would be possible going forward.

From our community speak it seems quality is in the recording, not the resolution or Mqa (please don’t anyone get defensive here).

Sound quality of a recording is entirely subjective. While a lot of people will find common ground on what an “audiophile recording” sounds like there is a whole section of the population who find such recordings to sound terrible (too quiet, no low end, distant, etc.)

It would be nice to see more reviews about the recording itself but isn’t that pretentious of us? To favor listening to a piece of art, not because of what the artist created, but because the way it is presented to us is said to be of a higher standard than another work of art?

I mean, we do this anyway, but calling it out in Roon… yeah… that seems pretentious to me.

This is why two ratings about the same album could be beneficial. It’s not just one piece of art against another. We live in an age of influencers/reviewers. We choose to listen, or not.

And have endless arguments and bun fights with those who agree or don’t and it will end up with the reviewers system not being transparent enough or he/she has both ears on one side of their head.

It comes down to, would we spend our time to listen based on what we read about the review. After all it’s basically free with a subscription, right?

how about highest fidelity to original master? minimal digital trimming applied and most expertly mixed. Personally, i’d rather know more about dynamic range of streamed music from, say, Qobuz. i don’t enjoy loudness-related loss of detail in recordings.

I suggested earlier that the reviewer would give two ratings. Music and Sonics to give an idea of sound to the prospective listener/buyer.

As sound quality is totally subjective based on the listener and his equipment, I would not want this.

I’m just using tags for this purpose like “first press” or “best version”.
If you want to dig deeper into the topic just head over to Steve Hoffman forum. It’s one of the most valuable places for music enthusiasts (in my opinion) regarding music, artists, mastering and all the “holy grails” for collectors…
