Roon 2.0.30 and ARC 1.0.47 are live!

Hello Everyone,

Improvements to Roon’s handling of playlists have been widely requested by our user community for years, and our recent customer survey confirmed the desire for major steps forward in this area. Today, we’re taking the first steps toward significantly improving and expanding Roon’s playlist capabilities.

We’re aware that playlists are just as important as albums for many users and with today’s release we’re taking the first major steps to ensure that Roon provides a first-class treatment of playlists. While the current changes are significant, we have a number of enhancements planned for future releases which will transform Roon into the leading solution for those who count playlists as one of their avenues to musical enjoyment.

As we’ve stated before, we are entering a new phase of Roon’s evolution with a strong re-focus on the needs of our core customers. This initial update of playlists is just the first step down that path. For us to ensure that we are making the right choices we encourage you, our loyal customers, to continue to provide feedback on our efforts. We’re listening and are working hard to ensure that Roon continues to evolve so that it provides a daily dose of joy to all of our customers.

Introducing 2-way playlist sync

One of the playlist requests we see most often is for the ability to carry the fruits of Roon’s discovery superpowers back to TIDAL, Qobuz, and KKBOX lists.

As always, you can add tracks to a list in a streaming service app, such as adding Qobuz tracks to a Qobuz list, and see those additions appear in Roon. But starting today, you can make changes in Roon, and they’ll be relayed back to streaming service playlists.

Now you can also add tracks to streaming lists from your local library or other streaming services. Roon will compare those tracks with available content on the service and then update the playlist in your streaming account. We’ve expanded two-way sync with functionality that flexes Roon’s deep knowledge of your music and metadata to create an incredibly agile and powerful playlist tool.

With these new features users can now copy an entire playlist to a streaming service and Roon will attempt to match all the tracks, tell you how many songs were found, and then create the list on the streaming service - all with a single click.

Making playlists first class

We’ve redesigned Roon’s sidebar to give playlists greater prominence and provide instant access to your recently updated playlists. You can sort playlists in that list like any other part of your collection or toggle the playlist sidebar off in Settings if playlists aren’t your thing.

Further enhancements include the ability to create folders in the playlist browser for powerful, flexible management of your collection. Power users can now create all the genre, mood, artist, era, theme (or any other) folders they’d like and Roon will present them cleanly and coherently.

Improved playlist browsing

Playlist creation and browsing are now more intuitive by allowing quick navigation to streaming lists and “read-only” rotations imported from watched folders or your iTunes library. We’ve also added powerful filtering functionality so you can always find the playlist you’re looking for - even when you can’t remember exactly where it lives!

We’ve also expanded access to family playlists. If multiple listeners in your household make playlists, Roon’s new playlist folder functionality will automatically make them available to everyone. No more searching for a favorite playlist in a different profile.

We’re excited to bring this new functionality to you as part of our commitment to ensuring that we always provide the best possible experience for our loyal customers. We look forward to your feedback on these changes and will continue providing tools that help you get the most satisfaction from your music collection in Roon.

As always, thank you for reading and for your continued support.

Late in our testing we discovered a minor bug which can occasionally impact the behavior of Roon when creating a playlist in Qobuz. In some cases when creating a new Qobuz playlist you will be informed that the operation was successful, but may be presented with an empty list in Roon, or ARC, or both.

Our engineering team is actively developing a fix for this now, but rest assured your playlist changes are still saved to Qobuz, and the display issues in Roon are temporary. Should you encounter this issue then you can simply re-navigate to the playlist detail or add another track to the list and it will appear fully populated.

If you do encounter this issue please accept our sincere apologies and rest assured that we’re on it.
