Roon app keeps crashing at start-up

OK, this is strange: when I use my MacBook Pro as Roon Remote I don’t have any problem.

All above problems only happen when using the Roon Remote app on iPhone (11pro, 14pro) or iPad.

So it seems to be related to the iOS app?

Are your iPhone/iPad remotes up to date? They must be updated from the App Store

Yes, everything is the latest version, also the apps. The funny thing is, Roon was playing all day long, with multiple interactions and searches via the MacBook Pro. The moment I opened Roon app on iPhone the whole system crashed and I even had to restart Roon Server (although it said it was “running”) to get my MacBook Pro connected again.

Another thing I noticed: songs I played or put in queue in Roon (as Remote) on MacBook Pro DO NOT show up in the queue on iPhone Roon Remote and vise versa, is that normal?

If you are looking at the same zone’s queue on both devices, then they should. It’s a per-zone queue

Ah yes, now I see, MacBook Pro was set to “Qutest” DAC and iPhone was set to “system output” (which basically is also my Qutest).

I switched my iPhone to “Qutest” and this caused a crash again. Now it’s running again.

Could this have been the conflict that caused my app to constantly make Roon hang?

Hmmm, if both outputs represent the same hardware, this might be harmful. Ideally Roon would recognize this, but maybe this is not possible with an external DAC. You can only try if it changes anything now that you fixed that

Thanks for the helpful info here @Suedkiez!

@Hans_Van_Rafelghem, if the issue is now only iOS related, we’d love to review a set of logs from one of the affected iOS devices. If you could please reproduce the issue and use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader?

Sharing the specific date and time of the issue will be helpful as well.

Thanks!

Hello Ben,

I uploaded the log files.

I’ll explain what happenend

Roon Remote was running on an iPad Air 3d generation, latest iOS. Music was on pauze, screen was asleep.

I tried opening Roon Remote on my iPhone 14pro but I couldn’t get it to work. It even asked to log in with username and password.

I woke up my iPad and Roon was there, I pressed play and it started to play.

AT THAT MOMENT Roon Remote on my iPhone worked also and directly changed screen to the album that was currently playing.

I don’t understand anything anymore.

I now have a MacBook Pro (M1) and an iPad Air that both work perfect as a remote.

My iPhone 14pro works from time to time but ultimately always makes Roon crash. So does my iPhone 11pro and my old iPad Mini.

(I was thinking of using my old 11" MacBook Air as remote but apparently the OSX is too old.)

Hey @Hans_Van_Rafelghem,

What track did you start playing?

What was the general time around when this happened?

Oh boy… I think that was “Don’t explain” from Cat Power (looking at my queue) and it was around 23:15 - 23:20 local time here. Didn’t realize that was important, sorry, but I did it in response to your previous request.

Hey @Hans_Van_Rafelghem,

Thanks for the additional information! We do see an odd error in your core diagnostics around the time you were streaming that song.

As a next troubleshooting step, could you please create a new Roon profile, and see if the issue occurs again? The errors in diagnostics may be pointing specifically to your existing profile which is odd, so I’m curious to see if a fresh profile responds differently.

Let me know! :+1:

Hi Ben,

Played all night long from my iPhone with the new profile but it crashed 2 times. I uploaded the log files of the last crash.

Song was ‘Paradise is Mine’ from Swans @ 01:11 as you can see on the screenshot.

Maybe too  for the iPhone
I can’t wait for Nov 21, Beggar tour in Berlin. Will be awesome again.

Hey @Hans_Van_Rafelghem,

Thanks for the info! Interestingly enough, we did find an error in your diagnostic that aligns with your timeline. However, the error itself is related to your database and so I’d be curious to again test - if you disable your local library (temporarily) and only stream content from Qobuz, do you run into the same issue?

From earlier threads, I can’t confirm if you had tried streaming on a fresh database prior to restoring from a recent backup. Let me know!

Haha, OK, I was only listening to the newer albums from Tidal and Qobuz that I added to Roon that I didn’t realise that I didn’t actually have a local database anymore since I completely erased my MacPro and installed Roon Server.

So basically all my old music, downloads and ripped CD’s and iTunes, is gone.

In my Mac Library I don’t see a “Roon” folder, also when I use Spotlight and search for “Roon” I only get all the backups on my Dropbox but nothing in my Mac Library.

Pfffff…

How can I get this music back without deleting all the new albums that I added to Roon. And where exactly does Roon keep all those albums?

Hey @Hans_Van_Rafelghem,

As a good next step, I would first head into your Roon Settings>Backups> Find Backups>Browse to see if you have any available backups that way. Don’t restore anything quite yet though!

After that, I would head to your tracks>select all>export. You can export all your tracks to a Sounddiz playlist, to which you can then add the playlist back into your library after you’ve restored it. From there, you should be able to easily add all of your newer tracks to your recently restored database.

After you’ve exported - go back to your backups and restore your database from a backup that would have your prior library.

Let me know if this helps, and if it makes sense! :+1:

Oh I have backups at several locations, fortunately. But how do I know if I select the correct one?

That Sounddiz, that is something new I need to install first? Not familiar with it. I suppose it’s also an iPad app?

Soundiiz is a website service:

I’d look for the most recent backup that was made before you erased everything. If you go to Settings > Backups > Find Backups > Browse and navigate to one of the backup locations, it will show you a list of backups with dates. But don’t restore anything yet until Benjamin tells you to!

BTW, while I was browsing on my brand new iPad Pro, Roon Remote on it crashed again. So it has nothing to do with my library (since I don’t have one right now).
