Describe the issue

ARC is crashing at the start of every few songs. Playback has generally been good for a while, but in the last week, it's started completely crashing very regularly. A new song starts, then about a second in it crackles and the app crashes. When I reopen the app, it's on the previous song with a few seconds left. I press play and it continues without issue until the next crash, sometimes on the following song, sometimes not for another 5. It happens mid-album, so not a problem adjusting to a different sample rate or source. I've had it on Qobuz, local files, different DACs, different networks, but always ARC, never the actual Roon app.

Hi @Spencer_Blaiklock,

Thank you for the report. We’ve identified crashes in diagnostics but want to confirm we’re pinpointing the correct event.

Can you please provide the name of the track that was playing before/after the latest crash? If there was a DAC connected, please also provide the make/model.

We’ll sync internally from there and then follow up with next steps.

For due diligence and to make sure we’ve pinned down conditions, please confirm the following:

  1. this crash occurs even when the queue contains only tracks of the same file type and quality
  2. this crash occurs in all connectivity conditions (both home WiFi and cellular)
  3. this crash occurs when you are playing to the system output of the phone as well as to devices

Thanks!

Hi Connor,

Thanks for getting back to me!

The main DAC has been JDS Labs Element III, but it’s also happened with Questyle M12.

  1. Yes
  2. I only use WiFi (limited data plan isn’t conducive to streaming music)
  3. I just tried system output and it lasted a lot longer, but just crashed starting ■■■■ from an Old Notebook by Minutemen (after Don’t Look Now by Minutemen)

Hey @Spencer_Blaiklock,

Thanks for sharing your results! Sorry to hear you experienced the same issue while using the system output of your device as well.

We don’t have any immediate next steps for you, as we’ll need to discuss your case with our development team for further investigation. I hope to have more information to share with you before the end of the week - thanks for your patience in the meantime! :raised_hands:

Hi @Spencer_Blaiklock,

We have a few fixes merged into the lastest Early Access releases that may resolve this issue, if you’re still experiencing it.

You can either migrate your RoonServer and ARC instances to the Early Access branch (see this guide), or wait until the fixes merge into the upcoming Roon production release in the next few weeks.

If you’ve experienced the crash more recently, please provide us with an approximate timestamp.

Thanks!

Great!

Yes, it’s still happening regularly. Most recently 11:32am Pacific Time (a few minutes ago), starting Make Believe Mambo after Independence Day, both from Rei Momo by David Byrne from Qobuz.

I don’t think it’s happened at all while in Offline Mode.

Hi @Spencer_Blaiklock,

It looks like you’re still on the production version of Roon - let us know if you still experience the same issues when on Early Access (if you decide to migrate over.) :+1:

I’m still on the main production stream, but had a core update last night. Did that include the updates you’re talking about? I’m still having the same issue today. I don’t think ARC has updated.

Hey @Spencer_Blaiklock,

We did release an update to both Roon and Arc! Here’s more info:

Let me know how things run after updating Arc as well! :+1:

I’m still experiencing the same issue, but I’m wondering if I really have the latest version. I went to make a Smart Playlist last night (very excited about that feature!), but the option to create a Smart Playlist weren’t there like they were in the video. I checked and my Core said no updates were available. Roon ARC is on version 1.0.58 Build 306.

Hey @Spencer_Blaiklock,

Here’s a link to the latest versions of Roon and Arc:

Removing and re-installing from the app store should generate the latest version, let me know if that helps!

I didn’t have a crash all day! So it looks like that’s been solved. Thank you!

I checked and my Core and desktop are both on production build 1470, but I still don’t see Smart Playlists. I guess that’s a topic for another thread though.
