Roon has become progressively slower in my system since upgrading from v. 1.8 approximately and it is now almost unusable.
It takes a long time to visualize my albums (4000+ favorites from Qobuz) or any other page. Also tags do not display correctly (I have thousands of classical music albums tagged as such and sometimes I only see 30).
I am running the lastest Roon version available, I use Innuos Zenith III as core, connectd via LAN to a very fast fibre internet connection. Speed of the connection is not the issue. I control Roon from my iPhone (latest software version installed).
Hi thanks for your reply.
For some years I had zero problem with Roon speed so either the latest upgrades greatly increase the computing power needed or it is something else… Since Roon became progressively slower and unreliable I tend to believe there must be another cause.
Any suggestion to make some tests would be much appreciated!
Did you have 4000+ albums in your library from day one? If in fact you have gradually increased the size of your library over the years, then that is likely to have reached a tipping point. And as @Marin_Weigel points out, the Innuos is underpowered according to Roon Labs requirements for a Roon Server.
thanks. My library didn’t change significantly over time. Software updates bogged down Roon in my case. it may be related to Innuos streamer but the change has been very big that’s why I suspect something else is also happening
I am not sure how to flag this to Roon staff to get support… @Geoff_Coupe could you please tag technical support to this chat?
I’d like to tdig a bit deeper before concluding it is my streamer… also, it that were the cause we would have a lot on Innuos users complaining here!
thanks in advance
Hi, thanks @noris . I rebooted thr system, delated play history and cache. Speed increased a bit, it is manageable but significantly worse than with v. 1.8 when Roon responded instantaneously.
Would you have any advice on how to mitigate the issue, other then replacing my streamer please?
You’re entering the realm of library size where we recommend 8GB available for RoonServer in addition to the base RAM for the machine. If you’re using heavier DSP, then the CPU’s power will become more of a consideration as well.
In the meantime, you can manage symptoms by disabling as much digital signal processing as possible in MUSE and limiting the number of Zones you use concurrently.
You might also see some improvement with the next public Roon release we are testing in #earlyaccess. We’ve merged some tickets that target overall performance and tag handling on RoonServer.
thanks for the tips and looking forward to the new v. release.
I have about 1500 album as files on the Zenith and the rest saved as streaming preferences in Qobuz. would it helped if I deleted the files? whenever the file is available for streaming I could do that…
One trick you may consider is to have only album “favourited” per artist , that is enough for an artist to appear in the Artist View. Then select the artist and on the artist page select discography and go from there.
That way you are minimizing the number of data returned from any search. If your processor and RAM are limiting it may help by cutting down the amount of data processed as well as keeping your db size smaller and hence faster processing.
The downside may be on the hyperlinking of artists , albums etc.
We’ve merged some improvements for performance that should help with overall symptoms of slowness or dragging in Roon. How has your system been performing in the last week?
Hi Connor, it is definitely usable now, even if not very fast. I think that deleting my listening history brought the largest improvement. I’ve used Roon very little over the past week, I’ll check again whether the new version is better
thanks
