Describe the issue

Roon keeps stopping. I noticed that my system (32 GB) is at 98% memory consumption. Roon is using over 17 GB of memory. If I restart Roon, memory drops to 5.5 GB. I think there is a memory leak somewhere. If I restart Roon, I'm good for a few days to a week before it happens again.

There are indeed leaks in the production version and work has been done on this. Some good-looking fixes are already in the Early Access testing version and will hopefully hit production soon:

This is really bad. I’ve been listening more as of late and I can’t go 2 days without having to kill and restart the Roon Appliance process. I’m only using it 3-4 hrs / day.

Hello @Stan_Eisenberg,

We are currently working on resolving some known memory leak issues, and the fixes are already included in our Early Access (EA) build. If you’re open to it, we can guide you through installing the EA version to see if it improves the stability of your Server.

Please let us know how you’d like to proceed, and we’ll be happy to assist further.

Hi @Stan_Eisenberg,

Are you still having trouble with the high memory usage? Would you like us to help you with moving to early access? Alternatively you can wait for the update to come to production. Let us know what you want to do.

Hi there, I’m a bit hesitant to use a beta - does the next release look like it’ll be any time soon? If not, I may take my chances with the beta as my system is almost unusable - is it easy to switch back and forth between release and pre-release channels? Thanks.

Hi @Stan_Eisenberg,

Yes it should be soon as long as no fixes are needed. An early access release is the step just before a production release. Switching back and forth between production and early access is possible but is a multistep process. If you’d like to learn a bit more check out this article. https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/roon-early-access-program

Thanks, I think I’ll just wait since it sounds like the next release is expected relatively soon. At least now I know that when my music playback starts acting wonky that I need to restart the roonappliance process.

Hi @Stan_Eisenberg,

Sure no problem. We’ll leave this thread open for now and once you get the update let us know if the memory problems are over.

The latest EA release is looking very promising.

If you are hesitant, I’d suggest you stay on the production build. A temporary workaround is to set up a nightly backup like the below screenshot in addition to your normal backup strategy.

This helps bring memory use down each time and should help until the next routine update.

Just a FYI - still waiting for the update, but wanted to share some info: I had originally thought the leak occurs due to playing music, but have since found that if I restart the process and do nothing for a few days that I still end up out of memory. I’m thinking it might have something to do with the library scanning, backup, or some other maintenance process that runs. Hopefully the upcoming fix addresses these issues.

Hi @Stan_Eisenberg,

Thanks for the update! We’ve since released a fix to our latest production version, which you can read more on here:

Let me know how things perform after you’ve updated to the latest version of Roon! :+1:

I am running Roon on an older Synology, and had to autostop/start Roon once a day because of the memory leak, and Roon was very slow and unstable in the beginng of a listening session, I use Tidal most of the time. Both of these two problems seems to be solved now, very satisfied :+1:!
