Description of Issue
In the past 2 years every update I would lose more Roon until I had no app remotes left. Finally I just deleted everything and tried to reinstall. Now I have nothing at all.
When updating to 2.0 Roon will not load music files, it keeps asking me for a new folder. When I add a folder it says it already exists.
The audio file does not see any audio devices. I am using a McIntosh D150 as a DAC that the Mac mini is connected. It worked fine until this update

Ben with the support team here, I’m sorry you’ve had such a difficult time getting Roon 2.0 to function properly for you.
Before we continue to troubleshoot, do you have a recent backup saved? Just in case you’d need to restore your database settings from a backup, I want to make sure one is available. If not, please make a fresh backup before anything else.
After that, I’d like to purposely refresh your database to see how things function on a clean slate. Steps to follow below:
I have tried all of this Roon does not give you which Roon core you have it just says Roon.dmg. Backup was of no use because there were no apps that are compatible with it. My only hope was to update to 2.0 and now all I have is a blank Roon screen with the logo in the middle of it.
Roon has never said that my system was not compatible it just downloads the new core over the old one and we hope for the best.
My only option is to start from scratch with a new Roon core install but it keeps seeing some residual from an old Roon core somewhere.
Please help or give me guidance of where I can go to see someone
To confirm, you followed the exact steps I’ve shared above, already? This differs from only re-downloading Roon and may prove to be helpful.
Can you please share a screenshot of the issue you’re seeing here? To confirm, you attempted to restore a backup after reinstalling Roon?
Roon doesn’t have a function like this - are you referring auto-updates? If you could please share some screenshots, that would be helpful in this case.
Thanks for the update - were you able to follow any of my above troubleshooting steps?
With that, have you tested out running Roon Server from your Mac, and use your iPhone as a remote device to navigate Roon? Here is more info on Roon Server:
This is the essence of my problem. In 1.8 the only place to see the build number was in the auto update which never worked. It just says there is an error in your update. You must then go to Roon and update the core which has no build number visible. The apps for your iPhone and iPad are not be compatible with the new core update. Now these apps are no longer available you must go to 2.0
Now when trying to install 2.0 it keeps saying to add a new music folder when you add a new folder it says that folder already exists, along with the message no Audio device detected. Obviously with no core the iPhone & iPad apps have nothing to connect to.
An odd issue you have here indeed! From your account page, I see your remote devices are up to date running build 1299, with your core running a slightly older build 1277. These should be compatible and you should still be able to connect to your core regardless of issues with adding your local library.
One thought - do you have a recent backup available? If so, you could:
Head to settings>general and logout of your account
Select your core device
Before logging back in, select “Restore from a backup” and restore from a recently saved backup.
That would restore your previous database which holds library and audio settings.
If you don’t have a backup to restore from, I’d like to see a screenshot of your Settings>Storage if possible. Let me know!
Thanks for the screenshots. It seems like you’re attempting to load up all your local libraries at once when first logging into your account, is that correct?
While that is absolutely one way to do it, I’d be curious to test adding your local files later on after the initial account setup process. If you remove your folders, finish up creating your account without any libraries added and then head into Settings>Storage and try adding just one local folder, do you experience the same issue?
Another thought:
Are you keeping your backups on the LaCie drive? I see you’ve also added this drive as a watched folder from the screenshots above. This could certainly be causing some issues, I’d avoid adding the LaCie drive for now.
Thanks for the update. It would be helpful if you could go through the below troubleshooting steps I’ve suggested so far, and let me know in detail what the results are:
Do you have any available database backups? I know you mention that there was some compatibility issues with prior backups. This should no longer be an issue now that your core and remotes are all on 2.0.
Have you tried updating your Mac to a more recent build beyond 12.2?
Do you by chance have Time Machine running on the Mac you’re using as a Roon Core?
System has been updated to 12.6.8, There is no change as I have stated before backups where deleted because they where no longer compatible with the apps and every time I tried to download a updated core it would not work.
I am now back to the apps saying they are not compatible with the core and getting the automatic core update error message.
When I drag a single album into Roon I get the message “Unexpected error loading album. Please try again later, (NotAvailable)
From your account page, it looks like you have two instances of Roon installed on your iPhone. I would suggest removing all Roon apps from your iPhone, and re-download the latest version from the app store - that should get you back on track with compatibility.
A few unanswered questions from my previous reply I’m still curious about:
Where are you dragging the album from? Judging by the screenshots you shared earlier, your local library seems to be nestled within:
hdmusics-Mac-mini-5>Untitled>Users>Mike
Is this correct? If so, can you please confirm that Roon has proper share access to the above folders? Here is more info on this:
My backup is a LaCie hard drive which backs up daily. It does show up on Roon. Roon keeps showing up in Roon when Roon starts its circular motion looking for a music folder over and over again then saying there is an error importing your music wether it be a single album or the library.
It also never sees any Audio equipment which it has been using for 2 years
The app and core connect when I download the most recent core and app for both devices. But nothing else works
If you could please provide more information to my prior questions:
I would love to help you move forward with finding a solution and therefore need to continue to learn more about your system setup in order to get you there - your answers to these questions are essential in this.
Do you have another machine you can set up as a Core temporarily?
I’m not able to review your core diagnostic as it isn’t connecting to our server currently. If you could, please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader?
Looking forward to pinning this down, thanks Mike!
I have tried dragging form documents and iTunes or music folders and I get the same response it just spins for 10 or 15 minutes and then crashes. The LaCie back up drive is the Time Machine
I’m not sure how to make sure the files are being shared but nothing has changed since it was working
When I search for Roon_log.txt or RoonServer_log.txt I get nothing
