Roon doesn't start anymore, can't uninstall or install again

I’ve been running Roon for long time, but recently it doesn’t start any more. It’s Roon 2.0 build 1413 running on a Windows 10 Pro. It’s set up to auto start when I start the PC but it attempts to start and after a while it shows “Waiting for your Roon Server…” and “your Roon Server doesn’t seem to be running”, offers the “Start Roon Server” button, I click on it and does the cycle again.

I tried installing Roon again, but I get the message that I have to quit all instances of RoonServer before continuing…but there are none. I checked the Task Manager and can’t find any.

I attempted to uninstall Roon to then install again, and I hot the same message that I have to quit all instances of RoonServer before continuing.

Would be glad to get help. Thanks in advance!

Hi @Horacio_Lewinski,

Thanks for writing in, and sorry to hear you’re having issues with Roon on your windows! Let’s see if refreshing your Roon Server database may help:

  • Make a Backup of your current RoonServer Database (or if you have a recently saved backup, this works)
  • Exit out of RoonServer
  • Navigate to your RoonServer’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RoonServer”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old”
  • Reinstall the RoonServer App from our Downloads Page to generate a new RoonServer folder
  • On the Roon Remotes, press “Use another Roon Server” and connect to the new database

Thank you benjamin.

I have a RoonServer backup from May.
I located the RoonServer database location, but when I attempt to rename the RoonServer folder to RoonServer_old I get an error message: “action cannot be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program”. What could it be? Naturally Roon is not running - at least in Task Manager I’m not finding any process running.

Are you looking at More Details and then the Details tab?

You were right! Somehow it showed up in tge Details tab were I was able to stop the app. And install Roon again.

Thank you!

@benjamin
I was able to rename to Roon_old and install a new Roon. Is there a way to recover what I had as setup from the old database? For now I set it up again and it’s playing music.

You may want to restore the latest backup you have from May

I went into Backups > Find Backups and when I selected the folder that I previously renamed _old I got this message…should I go ahead anyways?

Well in this case you seem to have chosen this folder as the backup location already when you created the backups. Was there no warning then?

You can’t undo that now, so you can only try if restoring from there works.

I actually was making a mistake when answering: for some reason I went looking for the _old database when seeking for the backup. Good thing I didn’t pursue.

Now I went into Backups and tried to restore fro. The backup folder. There are several backups there, from the last two months. Unfortunately the restore process gets started, shows 1%, 2% progress, then says restore failed. I guess there’s no way around this?

Let’s see what @Benjamin has to say…

Hi @Horacio_Lewinski,

Thanks for the update!

Does it give you a more detailed reason why the restore failed? I was able to review your account info and see your windows currently has ~16k local tracks. Are you still having issues?

If yes, please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader and our team will take a closer look into what might be going on. :slightly_smiling_face:

It says “Restore failed. Please check your backup folder and try again”

Roon is now working but I haven´t been able to restore the backup. The 16k tracks are in my music folder in a drive. I had Roon directed to that folder again to rediscover the music I had. But I lost playlists I had created in Roon (that I´m hoping to restore from the backup).

I sent the logs under “Horacio_Lewinski-Logs.zip”
Thank you!

Thanks for sending those over @Horacio_Lewinski!

Where are you accessing these backups specifically? Can you confirm Roon has proper file sharing access to the folders containing your backups?

I thought the request was to send the current log rather than the backup. Should I zip the backup folder and share that?

A post was split to a new topic: Problem Causing Frustration

Hi @Horacio_Lewinski,

You were correct in sending a set of logs over, my apologies for any confusion! The reason I ask about your backup directory is from errors we found in the logs you sent over, for example:

Warn: [broker/backups] restore first half failed on FileBrowser.Entry: [H:] General, WDC WD10EZEX-08WN4A0 : \RoonBackups: NotAvailable

It looks like Roon doesn’t may not have proper access to the directory your backups are located in. You may need to establish a connection to the drive and attempt another restore.

Interesting. Both Roon and the backup folder are in the same PC, in two different hard drives. How do I enable access to a drive/folder within the same PC? Should I copy the backup folder to the sme drive Roon is in?

Hi @Horacio_Lewinski,

This KB should help you with this:

Let me know if you’re still having issues after giving that a try!

I went ahead and shared the RoonBackups folder in drive H: with myself (as a user) and also added the shared folder in Roon > Settings > Storage, to no avail. Still having the same issue.

I´m not surprised: Roon is failing to restore a backup it created, in a folder it created and where it rewrote 10 backup versions since March 20.

I´m still not able to restore the backup.
