Description of Issue

Two things:

  1. Quite often Force Rescan Doesn’t Work

  2. The Edit Storage Location menu is missing an option to set Rescan Interval

Rescanning, on a Mac at least, is continuous, so I assume it’s the same on Rock.

So far, I’ve never had an album appear when I add it to my storage folder without doing a force rescan.

There’s definitely something up. Hopefully support will be able to shed some light on it.

You’re in edit storage location. Press cancel and your in database storagelocation. If you press the 3dot menu you can get back to edit

I don’t seem to have a Database section in Settings.

From Roon knowledge base.

USB Storage - Best Practice

If you’re going to directly connect a USB drive to your server, you will have some options about how you want to format your drive.

We recommend USB drives connected to ROCK be formatted exFAT if you require compatibility, or EXT4 if you don’t.

Advantages of using exFAT include:

  1. Cross-platform compatibility (macOS, Windows, Linux)

  2. No real limits on drive size or file size

ROCK will also work with NTFS ,FAT32, and EXT2/3/4 drives, but if you are starting fresh with USB storage, our recommendation would be to use exFAT.

Seems your disc is not seen (anymore?)

No such option exists for local storage (this includes USB storage connected to the Roon Server machine). That options is only present for remote (network) storage.

Oh, no. It’s visible. I only took a screenshot of the available options in settings.

I’m just curious as to why Roon doesn’t automatically update my library when I add something to my external drive.

Thanks for the information regarding external hard drives. Yes, I followed those tips when I was setting things up.

So, local storage doesn’t get automatically scanned? You have force a rescan every time you add anything?

No - drives connected directly to the NUC are under the direct control of Roon OS, which will monitor changes to the file system in real time.

If this isn’t happening with your USB drive, then something is wrong. What format have you used on the drive?

As far as I’m aware, exFAT.

These are the specs of my external Sandisk drive.

Just to make sure I’m doing it right…

I basically take a folder with an album and drag and drop it into the folder setup in my external drive that’s connected to my NUC.

For example, I’ll drag it from my Downloads Folder, as below.

Note, the arrow is pointing to my “Roon Daily Backups” folder, but I meant to point it to the “Lossless” Folder in the screenshot.

That looks fine - I do the same (but my download folder is on a Windows PC). It’s odd that Roon OS isn’t picking up the changes.

How long does it, normally, take for Roon to pick up the changes on your PC?

You’re running Roon OS on your NUC - and the drive is attached there. I’m running the same (but with an internal SSD), and Roon OS picks up the changes instantly.

I wanted to make sure that my external drive was, in fact, formatted in exFat, so I shut down my Nuc and plugged the drive into my Mac. Went into Disk Utility and, it is, in fact, in exFat.

So, there’s definitely something wrong.

It’d be nice if someone at Roon actually responded.

They will, but the Support team is less than a handful of people, and they operate a queue system, which is fairly long at the moment.

Do you have an alternative USB drive that you can try as a test? I wonder if there’s some firmware issue with the SanDisk.

The other one that I have is an almost identical drive…I’ll give it a try.

In the mean time, I’ll just have to be patient.

Thanks for your efforts, Geoff.
