ROON on a Beelink Me Mini

hi, I currently run Roon on a QNAP TS-464 and it works great, however I plan to move abroad in the coming months and need to downsize to a portable NAS and have purchased a Beelink Me Mini. It’s 6 slot M.2 NAS that fits in the palm of my hand, and is perfect for moving around and setting up in new locations when I need to access all my work files locally without the need of downloading huge files over slow networks. Which also means I can take Roon with me, however I have no experience of setting up Roon on a TrueNAS. I know there is no native app for TrueNAS, and everything points to setting up a docker using steefdebruijn/docker-roonserver…but I’m stuck.

The Beelink comes with Windows 11 pre installed, so the easy option would be to run Roon Server from there, but I’d much rather have it set up as a NAS and have the browser interface, network shares and backups that a NAS offers.

So it’s a long winded way of asking if anybody could kindly talk me through setting up on a TrueNAS from start to finish, or if the simple Windows setup option is the best bet?

Appreciate any help, thanks, Bob

There are some threads on running a Roon container on TrueNAS. These are the most recent, and may offer some help.

I use Podman on Ubuntu, but the commands are identical with the exception of networking and daemon. IIRC, setting up the volumes caused some confusion, and this is the same.

This is a useful source to convert run to compose.

Hi, thanks for your reply, and with all due respect, I didn’t understand a word of it  I don’t have the first idea about dockers, containers, jailmakers, truecarts, vm’s, proxmox or any of it. I google them, watch youtube videos, and it’s information overload, going down rabbit holes and not getting anywhere fast.

I honestly just needed a step by step guide, but appreciate this is time consuming and frustrating having to spell it out in the simplest of terms. I wish I could just find a small ssd QNAP device as I’ve figured out their software, but starting again with TrueNAS is already giving me a headache so might just stick the Beelink on ebay and get a Nucleas One and be done with it.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond though, I appreciate your help and apologise for being hopeless at this.

Unfortunately, I can’t provide a step-by-step guide since I don’t run TrueNAS.

You may find that running unRAID is an easier option that will probably tick all your boxes.

See this post. Don’t be concerned about the first part, which is about putting together hardware, and skip to the section on unRAID. It uses a prebuilt Docker image for Roon.
