Roon Radio repeats songs multiple times [Roon Investigating]

I experience this problem for maybe a year now, but I never found the time to write a ticket (I am on vacation right now)

Hi everyone,

Rest assured we’re investigating this issue and whether there are actionable steps for development to improve the listening experience in Roon Radio for those affected.

That said, we need reliable reproduction instances with which to equip development. We need to know:

  1. what tracks or artists are repeating with uncanny frequency
  2. what the seed track/album was for the affected radio session
  3. and the timestamp of a repeat instance

Thank you!

Hi @zenyatta80,

We’ve asked for specific technical information. If you’re simply providing feedback about your perception of Roon’s services, please do so in #feedback. The team reads those threads carefully.

Rants only clog up this support thread, since developers now have to parse extra comments to gather the requested actionable data.

For everyone, we need more examples of repeating tracks. Diagnostics from the reports you’ve sent so far have been functional in illuminating at least one path for investigation. QA is working on that. To speed things up, we need to gather more instances of repeats in diagnostics and pinpoint them.

The next time you encounter what you believe to be an uncanny repeat in Roon Radio, please note the following and post it here:

  1. What was the session seed? Please name the Album or Track.
  2. What was the Page from which you initiated playback of the seed? ie. Album Details, Artist Details, Recently Played on the Home Screen, etc.
  3. Had you previously started Roon Radio sessions using this seed? If so, can you estimate how your Roon Radio session was in that instance?

Thank you!

I just finished listening to Oasis ‘What’s the Story’ album where the seed track would have been the last track - ‘Champagne Supernova’.

For the next two hours it has literally played the same 10 artists over and over again -. REM, Chili Peppers, Blur, Pulp, Guns n Roses ( for some strange reason) etc. As usual there are lots of album repeats too.

I have both Qobuz and Tidal accounts connected.

Still a lot of room to improve when it comes to how Roon Radio handles the feeding of songs.

I searched for “Running Low”, and selected the track in Virgin River soundtrack and started “Play now”.

After five songs I stopped and went back to my search and selected “Running Low” and started “Play now” again.

From “My History” you can see although the tracks were not repeated, the albums in the pool were repeated 4 out of 5 the second time around.

Another test I am no longer able to run is, when I had Tidal and played the album version of the single Castles by Freya Ridings, what’s following was always the same song by a female German singer. (I now have Qobuz which doesn’t carry the same single.) This was just one example.

It is really hard to tell because I observed the issue in a rather unsystematic fashion. This is my current working hypothesis:

  • The issue happens at least with the tracks that I play often
  • Because I played the latest album “Dawn FM” by The Weeknd a lot after I bought it, this was when I first noticed the issue
  • The order of the tracks (radio queue) that follow this album is static
  • I can start playing the album, skip all the tracks until the last one, and I will still end up with the same queue
  • Only adding new tracks to the library may insert new tracks in this static queue, but the order of the tracks in the queue remains untouched
  • Providing a timestamp for the issue does not make sense to me because it happens with 100% reliability. I just need to play the album to provoke the issue

Just a suggestion, but maybe it would make sense to start a “master” thread in which everybody can post their experiences with the issue? Then I would move over the most relevant info, and we could close this ticket.

But it might help Roon to look up what happens at their servers at this time

  1. August 2023, 17:20 Berlin time

But I am not sure if this really helps. I am not streaming anything online. I just play music from my local database. So I am not sure if the Roon servers are capturing any of this.

Well but it’s not a large amount of work to provide the information if Roon staff asks for it, whatever they want it for

You are right though that with local music the Roon cloud is not involved, as discussed further up in this thread and according to this:

Mt experience is similar - although I do stream through Qobuz - in that the repetition appears to be much more prevalent if the “seed” track is something have played frequently.

Next time it happens I’ll get a timestamp and post it on this thread.

I did another test of the Radio feature and found some improvements.

I started off with the last song on the SYML album and let the Radio play 9 songs after; then I restarted the test from the same SYML song, and Roon played 8 songs. One album was skipped by Roon the second round, the rest were in the exact album order, although most songs were not repeated from the first round.

(above first round; below second round)

In my case, there are no changes if I do not add new tracks to my library. I played the Dawn FM album by The Weaknd just yesterday, and the order was the same as always.

I just finished playing the latest Chemical Brothers album which contains the single ‘No Reason’. This was from my local library.

The first song played by Radio was the single ‘No Reason’ on Qobuz. Blah…

This is very common. Roon Radio very often plays the same artist as the seed in the first iteration.

Same thing happened to me just yesterday. Played a roon daily mix and the last song was Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot. Radio took over, and the first song it played was Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot. Lol.

I have no issue with Roon playing the same artist but in this instance the first track played by Radio was a song which had played only a few tracks earlier on an album.

That should be an absolute no no.

It’s just laughable. Rule #1 of the algorithm should be ‘Don’t ever play the same Artist-Track Name pair for X number of songs’

Maybe Radio gets thrown by the same song being available locally and on the streaming services and thinks they are different?

My local NAS has the same song as Qobuz (downloaded from Qobuz), and after Roon Radio played the local file, it played the Qobuz version.
