Roon Radio repeats songs multiple times [Roon Investigating]

Maybe they changed it with the always-online requirement in Roon 2.0 or something. I don’t know but more and more things get moved to the cloud

I asked in the “Everything Affects The Sound” Facebook group if they experience the same problem, and someone replied he has the same issue even using 2 online services. So maybe it IS a bug.

Maybe but the complaint has existed for a very long time

I’ve just disabled Qobuz on my core, and tried a couple of seeds.

  • bad guy: followed by everything I wanted, Rice, and A Little WordIn Your Ear (little music similar to Billie Ellis in my library)
  • Turn It On Again: followed by Firth of Fifth, Vienna, Songbird (much more rock in my collection)

Repeating the seeds gave me a different queue for both, but the first had the same artist, album, but different tracks. Turn It On Again was followed by Don’t Stop Believing (live) and Dance on a Volcano.

So, I think it all depends on what’s in your library, and the seed, i.e., the last track played. Also, if you’ve used a playlist with many songs from the genre, the algorithm may try to avoid playing these again.

Anyway, it seems to work as I remember, but it’s not close to what Valence provides with streaming music.

Thanks for the testing!

I still don’t get it. With a library of >20k tracks, and then playing a track where I have a lot of similar music, shouldn’t the algorithm be able to create a different queue? In my case, it does not. If I play track A, I always get an identical queue A. If I play track B, I always get an identical queue B.

It seems that this behavior is not regarded to be a problem because other people have reported this for a longer time now, but it was not addressed at all. The mentioned solution with using a streaming service is a no-go for me because all existing services have a rubbish quality. I guess I will have to find a better alternative to Roon then, but right now, I don’t know what that could be.

A suggestion: take a backup of your library, then clear the database and start over. Do you get the same behaviour? After experimenting, restore the backup.

Thanks for the suggestion. I cleared the database, let Roon re-read all the tracks on the SSD, and then started Dawn FM. Only one of the first ten Roon radio tracks was different. I then started restoring the backup because I needed my settings back (including my 20-band parametric equalizers for 2 of my 3 rooms).

Hi everyone,

There’s a lot of justifiable frustration here. The team is taking a deep look into reports of repeating tracks in Roon Radio, and we’re hoping those of you who are inclined to share technical summaries of your experience can be of assistance here.

@RBO, @J_B, @Paul_Melde, @Gareth_Irwin,

You’ve all provided precise reports of this symptom above - is there any chance you’re willing to provide some answers to the question below?

If you’ve recently or are currently experiencing repeating tracks in Roon Radio:

  1. What was the session seed? Please name the Album or Track

  2. What was the Page from which you initiated playback of the seed? ie. Album Details, Artist Details, Recently Played on the Home Screen, etc.

  3. Had you previously started Roon Radio sessions using this seed? If so, can you estimate how your Roon Radio session was in that instance?

  4. Is there a seed that causes repeats with 100% reliability? What’s the seed?
@Gareth_Irwin, you’ve been robust in your assertion that this is true for you. We would cherish a little more detail to help make your reports actionable since this is ruining your Roon experience.

We’re grateful for both your patience and contributions. That should be all we need. We’ll follow up with more details once they’re available to technical support.

Frustratingly I have moved roon to a new server of late and so dont have a lot of history but I can certainly set off some music. I listen to a lot of albums regularly.

One is Roger Waters - Is this the life we really want. After the last song you get Roger Waters Uncomfortably Numb redux, every single time.

After Lambchops ‘Mr M’ you get the first song from Lambchops ‘The Bible’ then a track by Bill Calahan, every single time and without fail (followed by Smog, every single time)

After Craven Faults Netherfields work you get the track Craven Faults Foddergang

Select Pink Floyd as the seed artist. After a few dozen tracks it just starts repeating the same handful of artists and repeats albums from those artists.

It also plays a lot of Phil Collins and Tracy Chapman for some reason…

I have both Tidal and Qobuz accounts connected.

I rarely use Roon Radio due to this problem, but I will try and report back…

I will point out that this only seems to happen to me with very popular artists.

Also, usually the seed is the Artist Page (Overview) and I just hit “play now” (not “start radio”) when I experience these problems.

But Play Now on an artist page is not intended to start Roon Radio (that would be Start Radio) but …

So I’ve actually just had it happen with what I’m playing right now. Offending track: Can’t Find My Way Home, by Blind Faith.

  1. Seed song was Jefferson Airplane - Somebody to Love, from Bless Its Pointed Little Head. Probably from Qobuz - I don’t recall owning that album.
  2. Playback was based on today’s “Your Daily Mix” - Jefferson Airplane. I saved a copy of the playlist if you want it.
  3. I frequently use Your Daily Mix, and let that keep rolling to Roon Radio.
  4. I don’t know that I’ve found a seed that consistenly causes the behavior, but the Blind Faith album is a very, very frequent culprit. The repeat track was approximately the 20th Roon Radio song after the initial playlist ended.

Hope that helps!
Paul

Happened a second time during the same session - different song. She’s Not There - Vanilla Fudge.

Third song, same session: Me and Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin & the Full Tilt Boogie Band, from the album Pearl. I have a hi-rez digital copy, but it wasn’t easy to determine where this was sourced from.

2 posts were split to a new topic: Shuffle Artists Repeating Tracks

Thank you, everyone, this is extremely helpful and should help bear fruit in our investigation. We’ll follow up here if we require any more details.

For an issue that has been reported since Dec 2021 (as per this thread) and maybe even earlier (there are multiple threads on this) while its good that Roon acknowledge and are investigating this, to have to wait this long for roon to start to “investigate” a fundamental problem with one of their most advertised features is baffling to say the least!!

Just saw this in my weekly digest so here (late) to say, I don’t have the time or inclination to test right now but my subjective experience mirrors your own – Roon Radio is worse than it used to be, and at least tends to do the same thing every time it kicks in. I’m mostly an album listener, so I queue an album and I guess because the last song on the album doesn’t change, neither does the Radio playlist that follows.

I used to like playing an album and then letting Radio run afterwards, now I use Plexamp if I want that discovery experience, which is suboptimal. In addition, I think that Valence is subjectively worse at what it picks than it used to be, even setting aside the repetitiveness.

Yes - this type of problem has existed for at least a couple of years. Interesting to hear that @Rohangis_Mohseni only started experiencing the problem recently. For me, it happens when I’m linked to Tidal but not when limiting Roon Radio to my local library, and the issue has persisted regardless of the hardware I use to run my Roon server. I see on the other thread that the Roon staff is paying attention to this again, as it seems the investigation that purportedly began in Mar 2022 did not lead to resolution.
