Roon ready DAP 2023 (Updated Title)

Absolutely!

The DAP itself has some heft to it and you can use it at a personal space heater if need arises, she runs hot. Multiple gain levels drive all my gear and it works as an external DAC if you wanted to use it in that manner. The 4.4mm balanced out is nice too. I hated the 2.5mm I bent that adapter a few times.

The only way I can get Arc to use the SD on my Hiby R6 2020 is to format the SD card as internal storage, works then.

I hadn’t thought of trying that.
Great idea, thank you.

If this works on the M6 Ultra I might be a buyer…

The option to format as internal storage is not present on this device.

Boo that.

We are getting closer and closer tho.

My prediction? That in 2023 we’ll see some devices marketed as “Roon ARC Ready” meaning that they run ARC just fine offline or online AND that they make the storage accessible to ARC. And then… I’ll hit the bid.

It’s a bit obscured on the Hiby, I had to format the card as portable storage first. Then select the card again and in the top right menu choose ‘format as internal’. I’m not an android guy so sorry my instructions suck

Wow. Cool!

I’m running out of reasons to not try one of these as a portable Roon headphone zone around my house.

I (vaguely) recall that device OEMs can block adoptable storage. I can imagine a DAP manufacturer doing this because once an SD card has been adopted, it can’t be seen by a connected Mac or PC when the device is in storage mode. This obviously means that you can’t move music files onto it but it also means that the device OEM can’t instruct you to go stick an APK or firmware update or something else on your card for device management or software installation purposes.

Doesn’t surprise me that Shanling would set the bit preventing it.

I wonder what Roon can do here. I imagine they have to avoid downloading Qobuz or Tidal content onto an SD card in a format that allows someone to just copy it off and use it. Hmmm.

They can’t download tidal or qobuz period, I imagine it’s ram cached for the playback buffer.

I am not sure I follow. I am able to stream Qobuz within Roon on this device. Doing so now to be sure.
I also was able to download a purchase but was not prompted for the SD card.

I’m referring to the post above not yours.

Thank you for the correction! That was a very fault assumption on my part - glad you’re here to set things straight.

I could have presented it a bit nicer than I do though. Seems a bit abrupt and rude now I read ot back that was not my intention.

If you say so. Didn’t occur to me to take it that way. Thank you, though.

I have spent the past day abusing this DAP because I can. It runs cooler with the new firmware and I had no issues with either ARC or Roon as an endpoint.

Observation: It is odd to me to see albums I play under ARC appear in Roon remote. Yet I can not transfer from ARC to a Roon remote.

Two different apps talking to a common core, but not to each other.

Does the Roon app work well on the device when you’re on your local network? That would obviously get you transfer in that scenario.

@Johnny_Ooooops has been playing with VPN options. If you could get that working, you’d be able to run Roon whether or not you’re physically on your LAN.

Roon remote works splendid locally. It is a small nit and would really only be for someone travelling home wanting to finish their album inside.
Not a very must fix priority there.
