Roon’s recommendation for collaborators and “performing the music of” have been stuck with same recommendation for months. I have tried resetting database and restoring backup, restarting server, clearing cache… nothing helps. Furthermore what is recommending is nothing close to any music I listen to. I used to find new music I like using these recommendations.
Thanks for reaching out. Do you by any chance have multiple Roon profiles? If so, are the same artists recommended across profiles, or just your main one?
I did create 4 more profiles for my family members - but they don’t use Roon and those profiles don’t have any recommendations (daily mixes and other) at least in Roon ARC. I can double check in Roon App when I get home later. For those profiles, only “Recently Added” and “Playlists by Roon” sections are showing in Roon ARC. My profile shows those unwanted recommendation in Roon ARC too.
Thank you for your report. Taking a look at the diagnostics uploaded automatically to our servers from your RoonServer machine, we see the requests to update the featured covers widget continually time out.
In other words, Roon is attempting to update the “Performing the Music Of” and “Collaborators” widgets, but the requests to Roon’s discovery servers never get through.
Do you have any firewalls, antivirus software, or VPNs that might be filtering certain upstream traffic in this network?
I recommend investigating whether there is a reliable DNS server assigned in your router - the URL for Roon’s discovery service might be failing to regularly resolve. We usually recommend Google (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) as a default DNS server.
Your Roon ecosystem appears to span multiple VLANs/subnetworks, according to our diagnostic servers. Do you have any managed switches in between your ROCK and the main upstream router that might be statefully monitoring traffic or scheduling packets?
Looking back through your post history, you’ve had intermittent device discovery and image loading issues that have resolved without conclusion. It’s possible these are also due to an underlying network hardware/software factor that we can resolve here.
My network has always been set the same way with all audio/multimedia devices and ROCK on same VLAN, and firewall rules to allow devices running Roon remote on main VLAN to access those devices.
Only recent change in the timeframe I started noticing this is I upgraded UniFi CK, but that shouldn’t affect any firewall or DNS related settings. I don’t have any VPN for those devices/VLAN. Regardless I’ll review settings you mentioned to see if UniFI changed something behind my back.
Thank you for looking into this and I’ll report back what I find if network settings related:
Changed DNS server to both 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 from OpenDNS and disabled firewall rules, still same result. Also another thing that I started noticing recently is after I go to home screen bouncing jellyfish/roon icon stays on for about 10s before the daily mixes section loads. After that some of the times same jellyfish appears again before covers/collaborators and stays on for about 30s. And now that I have spent almost a day trying to debug, those delays are more noticeable to me and more frustrating.
If it was DNS issue why does everthing else work except few functionality?
PS. BTW forgot to mention image loading issues that you saw on my history never resolved for me - still happens intermittently. I have just given up on that.
I have Qobuz, Apple Music. BulOS app and speakers, Amazon music, dCS Mosaic as well as their steamer running with no issue in the same VLAN. And my firewall rules are pretty basic, and Roon had been ok with those rules for almost 3 years too I have also switched to static IP on ROCK today with 8.8.8.8 DNS server in IP setting (my preference is to specify DNS server on router), but no changes to covers or collaborators recommendation.
As second test, I switched to a different profile that was not used before. After about an hour daily mixes section appeared for that profile that matched the music genres I had it playing. But no covers or collaborators section appeared.
If there is not easy solution to it then Roon stops being useful for me. Hopefully there is a simple fix soon. If we don’t know what it is then it’s only matter of time before some other function will break.
Something changed in recent software release I think, not sure if it’s possible to go back to prior version to see if problem goes away.
I banned two previous collaborators who had been sticking around for weeks today and after few minutes collaborators changed to another two I don’t listen to. I banned the two again but that didn’t seem to have any effect. And no amount of banning seems to change covers recommendations.
On second profile I was testing with that profile now has covers and collaborators recommendation that matches music I was playing for it.
However the fact that collaborators changed even once even for my profile should mean no DNS or firewall issue.
This is getting even more strange - covers main artist didn’t change but all the songs are different today, artists I banned yesterday are gone now in covers playlist, but main artist still the same!
Some improvement today…. Covers main artist still keep returning to Olof D (probably every 3 out of 4 times), but for the first time in a while I can see it actually switch temporarily to other artists I listen to, and same for collaborators.
I have the same issue. Collaborators and Performing the Music Of . . . are not being updated on a daily basis, the way they were before the last update.
@Jim_Maurer any special DNS/DHCP/firewall/VPN/VLAN settings in your setup?
Looks to me like it’s Roon’s discovery engine issue because I rebuild my network with simpler setup and issue didn’t go away. After restoring my default setting yesterday, it just randomly started to intermittently work today. So doesn’t sound like anything network related on our end.
Could you please attempt to reproduce the issue while in a normal LAN setting? Our team is not currently equipped to fully support VLAN setups, and so reproducing within a typical local LAN setup would be helpful.
Roon doesn’t test its software with VLAN at all? VLANs are pretty common configuration in this day and age.
As mentioned above I tried it with normal LAN setup and it was still happening. So it is reproducible if that’s what you meant.
If your request is to leave my network with non-VLAN config so you can analyze the traffic in my network itself then that’s a security issue for me given various IoT devices I have. I cannot do that for extended period of time.
Today Roon went back to old behavior again with same artists for both covers and collaborators.
Update 2 - I moved all roon related devices (ROCK, remote, endpoints) to default LAN and still the same issue.
No special DNS/DHCP/firewall/VPN/VLAN configuration that I am aware of. I have Verizon FIOS coming directly into the main node of my mesh network. I don’t use the verizon router. I did have to install Tailscale to get Roon Arc to work but now it works flawlessly. . .
