Roon recommendation for collaborators and performing the music of not updating [Ticket In]

Today I got the same set of Daily Mixes that I was getting all last week. Collaborators and Performing the Music of . . . have also stopped working. They show the same artists they did all last week again.

If logs would help, just let me know how to collect them.

Same thing started happening to me on Daily Mixes too. And lots of lag with the bouncing roon icon when opening the app or switching pages too (could be DNS, could be roon’s server/engine - so far it’s just been shotgun approach). Main mix artist rotates between same 8-10 artists, though the playlist in each mix changes slightly it’s generally same tracks recycled from one playlist to another. And tracks in daily mix used to be in at least related genre. Now they are just seem like random assortment of music (see Springsteen mix today for example).

Sounds like roon has way to collect logs without user intervention. It sounded from previous response they do have ability to see “diagnostics uploaded automatically to our servers from … RoonServer machine”. So not sure why the diagnostic doesn’t have appropriate level of information. That would probably be more helpful for debugging. Or tell me the exact network activity/traffic that’s failing/timing out and I could even try to debug why if the diagnostic data required specific info for my network that roon cannot access. Asking to change network config to see if issue goes away doesn’t resolve the inherent bug even if issue goes away. Nor narrow the issue down if the issue doesn’t go away.

Since months now Roons recommendation system is a complete mess.

  • Daily Mixes are offering the same small set of songs again and again
see Daily Mix - frequently picking same songs
  • Roon radio plays songs from only a few albums
    see dozens of threads
  • Cooporation and other areas showing the same content againj and again
f.e. this I see 7 of 10 times I open Roon (and I have not played anything from Roger Taylor for years)

As this is going on for a very long time now and it looks like all the threads complaining about these issues leads to nothing, I have to ask again:

  1. Why is there no reaction from Roon?
  2. Are you aware of the problem at all?
  3. When can we expect a fix?

The recommendation system is one of advertized key features in Roon and unfortunately I cannot recommend Roon in its current state to my friends. Even though I love Roon in principle.

And I’m very disappointed not to hear anything from support, even though it’s been many months and a lot of user reports. This is inappropriate for a product that is not really cheap.

You’re absolutely right and summarized it well.

I’ve seen no other option but to go to Spotify to find good recommendations there and then search for them in Roon and add them.

Very cumbersome, very frustrating.

Is this with Tidal or Qobuz?

Edit: Tidal it seems and I refer to the below thread. I thought it was.

With Tidal

That’s not what we pay for with Roon or could we reduce the Spotify costs on our Roon bill?

New day and surprise:
Daily Mixes:

Collaborators:

@AE67 please see the above posted link. Roon has acknowledged and found the issue. A fix is in the pipeline.

How is the Tidal sync issue related to the mentioned problems?
How is f.e. Tidal responsible for ‘Walk on the wild side’ being in each second Daily Mix?

It was working normally for few hours last night. Back to repeating same artists again….

I use Qobuz. Been having this issue for month or so now and reported in

Hi @patsox75,

Let’s summarize what we’ve seen so far:

  1. Roon is set up on a separate VLAN from your main router.
  2. Requests from Roon to the internet are failing to receive a response.
  3. We’ve ensured the main router can reliably resolve addresses by changing DNS. It’s not clear if you connected RoonServer to the main upstream router (single VLAN) but I doubt that’s the issue here. That doesn’t mean it’s not a vulnerability more broadly.
  4. Roon’s recommendations are intermittently stale despite cache clearing. It’s unclear if this is due to network issue, but there are broader reports in both Roon Software Discussion and Support indicating that “Performing the Music of” and “Collaborators” are not updating as expected.

Yes, this is the possibility we are investigating. However, updates or changes to discovery service are not shipped on the release track, so 1) this wouldn’t have regressed after an update and 2) if there is something wrong, we can fix it quickly.

We’ll merge threads into this one for tracking. Thanks for your patience.

Hi @AE67,

This issue has been broadly reported in Roon Software Discussion as you’re aware. We’re tracking reports in this Support subcategory here:

https://community.roonlabs.com/t/roon-recommendation-for-collaborators-and-performing-the-music-of-not-updating/300023/25

We will merge your posts into the above tracking thread so you can receive updates from the team. Please be aware that this issue is ticketed and under investigation. Thank you for your patience.

@AE67 is also using VLANs?

If it was VLAN or firewall related - roon has been working fine for me for over 2.5 years with same VLAN setup. And the few times it worked properly last week - that cannot be explained away.

As far as firewall goes, new traffic from roon VLAN to main VLAN are blocked in my setup, but I have no firewall rules from VLAN to internet. I was forcing roon VLAN to use OpenDNS since Day 1, changed it to CloudFlare/Google based on recommendations here, but nothing changed. With endpoints, ROCK, remotes all in same VLAN, from roon servers perspective, everything is on same subnet, so should be VLAN agnostic - though all traffic would get tagged, if that can the potential cause.

@connor Regarding your summary -
RE #2 - Is this the only functionality/widget that requires Roon to receive response from internet? Do you have a script I could run from another machine connected to that VLAN to see what exactly is failing?
RE #3 - I did move ROCK/endpoints/remotes to my main network, and issue didn’t go away (though I didn’t remove any existing VLANs because that would break lot of things at my home).

Got combination of sticky cover artist and collaborator, collaborator changing but not cover and vice versa this evening.

And both changing but went back to sticky artists again

No, my setup is simple. The server is directly cable connected to the router and all problems happen also if I open a Roon client on the server not only with Wlan devices.

And I do not have network problems with Roon. All metadata, covers, playlists are working flawless and very fast.
I also get every day new Daily Mixes with different tracks. But why is ‘Walk on the wild side’ and several other tracks in each second mix?
Also ‘Perfoming the music of’ and ‘Collaborators’ did change, but on 7 of 10 days it is ‘Roger Taylor’. The same thing Binesh_Shrestha shows us, only with another fallback artist.

So I am sure it is not a network problem, it is a problem with the recommendation system. It chooses from a too small set or uses no history and randomness, so it came to the same results far too often.

@connor does Roon use any other DNS than ones from DHCP or static IP? Does it use encrypted DNS or any non-standard ports for DNS?
